People won't vote for something that is vastly economically different to what Blair, Major and Thatcher have offered us. Free markets, public services and a rather shity welfare net is where the voters 'centre of gravity', is.
The Lib Dems have never been a particularly right, or left wing party. 50% income tax for the top 1% of earners or not they are still what they pretty much always have been.
The difference is they are Liberal, whilst Labour believe in a big powerful state and are quite authoritarian and the Tories are social conservatives. That hasn't changed in over a decade. And it its these values that divide the voters more than any other.
