letting kitty out

What rubbish!

All our cats go out, we are not far from a big road. Of the many cats we've had over the years, most of them have lived to a ripe old age.

let me elaborate....the average lifespan of an AMERICAN cat that spends most its life outdoor is 2 or 3 years.

There isn't. But it seemed a little bizarre to have your post stating the bleeding obvious. I wondered if there was more to do it than that?

because ti's not the bleeding obvious to some pople. I've had this discussion many times on why we let cats out and they don't.

Firstly, it's more like 3-5 years, I think. And I wonder if that figure results from the variables such as the US being far more of a car culture, having more large predators than the UK does, the fact that a lot of US cats are de-clawed (thus depriving them of one of their defenses as well as the means to climb a tree or fence to get out of harm's way), together with the tendency to keep cats indoors so those who are outdoors are more likely to be feral or stray or lost.

Second, why did you post it up? It's pointless information in context of the OP, since ShiftyBagLady and her kitten both live in the UK.

because SBL asked whether she should let her cat out or not

why is the life expectancy of a feline in the US relavent to the decision someone is making in the UK where the conditions are very different?

I don't know where SBL lives, she/he could live in the Ukraine for all I know :)

why?

It's not just about conditions though is it? Cats aren't solely contained in the US because of expectancy, but also because it's not seen as the done thing - there isn't a silly/traditional belief that cats are more 'independent' or stuff like that. It's generally seen as bad form to let your pet out unsupervised, particularly when it could harm other animals.

I've not seen that when I've had this discussion on US based sites, The argument is pretty much exclusively about the safety of the cat

Nahy, a quick google will contradict you on that one. One example here:

google will contradict my personal experience of having had this discussion on Us based sites?

Will it re write those discussion for me?

Yes, yes it will.

It will also wipe your memory of any alternative discussion having taken place.

so there's something in that blank space in his post that is mind altering?

Don't look at it too closely. The closer you look the deeper the effect.

I bet you don't remember when you got banned last week, do you.

Why is it remotely silly!? Millions of cats are completely fine being allowed to go where they please, and there are still millions of birds and millions of vermin.

The world keeps turning, there are other things to get on your high horse about... Vista, Subway, McDonalds!

Calling cat owners silly, lazy and irresponsible is basically superior, sneering trolling as you know everyone does it.

*folds empty popcorn wrapper away*

So, has the cat come back in again yet ShiftyBagLady?

yes he has, well i had to break up the party actually as the bigger cat was pinnign FInn to the floor using the clamp jaws around throat method. i though that ws enough excitement for the day

although we've had differing opinions, broad sweeping statements, popcorn and hilarity at one anothers expense this thread feels hollow. theres something missing, something i cant quite put my finger on......
oh i know, pics
