letting cats outside

I'm letting our two out during the day now. Dylan is a lot keener than Hendrix, who is a soppy lump of a cat who loves being inside (he sounds a lot like Nero, toggle). They've got the hang of the cat flap, but every morning I have to open the door for them because they seem to have forgotten that they can go out, the dozy sods! I am keeping them in at night, along with Harve the grown-up cat, because I'm paranoid about them getting run over (our other cat, Lottie, was killed on Railton Rd one night last summer).

I have one of those two-way cat flaps that you can set so they can come in but can't get out. One night I woke up to great commotion caused by an interloper cat which had followed Harve into the house, but was panicking because he couldn't get out again!

Aw, a way of gaining new cats!

I don't want any more cats! And this one had obviously been bullying my Harve, the brute!

:( poor Harvey, but :D at the cats coming in, one day my sister's neighbour went to see if she had seen her cat, sian said no, but let's check and the cat was asleep on sians bed...next to her cats! another time, when the weather was really shite, she found 6 extra cats in her kitchen

/another derail/ but is Nero from the same litter as Hendrix, i.e, not the Albert litter? Tommy's a bit soppy too, just wondering if it's a family trait?!

I think all the half-Persians are really affectionate -- wonder if it's the "posh cat" in them?

No idea. But I love having one utterly soppy cat. She's affectionate on her town terms, she sleeps snuggled up with my feet, but won't be picked up by anyone.

Let 'em out... every indoor US cat I've met (which is most of them) seemed unhappy and was very overweight. Cats are smart and pretty tough - one does hear stuff about 'Ooh, foxes will get them' and so on, but I've never heard of it happening.

Outdoors behind the house is always safer, or course, as they're more likely to avoid roads.

I would like two things to happen now - for there to be an Albert thread, for us to see all the piccies of the Albert kittens and for there to be another thread for pictures of the other non-Albert litter.

Please. :)

Oh - and I have a whole family of foxes living in my garden. My cats are not bothered by them at all. They all seem to get on fine

Well we've been letting him out for a few hours each day and he seems a lot happier. He's also less of a pain first thing in the morning.

Our cat doesn't go out at night, though she should. We don't have a catflap. She'd be free to roam if we did.
I wouldn't lock her out at night as she does get bullied by the other cats for some reason and often gets comes bowling in after a caterwauling outside, with scratch marks in her fur. Not sure why she's having so much trouble. ??
She's adorable so maybe they're just jealous.
Oh, and she's officially ours now - we are no longer fostering but have adopted :)

:) Congratulations.

Sometimes when cats move to new areas (or start going out more) they fight turf wars. My cats generally come off worse in theirs - even though there's two of them. They're only brave when the back door's shut and then they are big hissy monsters through the glass
