Sorry, it wasn't meant to be a bragging thread - I assumed that lots of people would be on comparable or better speeds.

I am on a BT line - they have a faster service here but I have stayed on the existing one for the time being.

I think probably I am a long way from the local exchange, but as I can watch TV programs without too much trouble it is fast enough for the moment.

    Ping 64ms
    Download 55
    Upload 13

BT Broadband. My server is in Maidenhead apparently.

why is my ping so slow? If you take say JimW, we have similar download and upload speeds, but my ping is 64 compared to his 3? (I assume low ping is good?)

I can't fail to notice all your "ping" times are pathetically low.

I've got proper man-sized ping times, me:

    C:\Users\Chap>ping bbc.co.uk -n 10

Pinging bbc.co.uk [] with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1192ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=989ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1000ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1034ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1029ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=997ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1025ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1045ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1037ms TTL=57
    Reply from bytes=32 time=1139ms TTL=57

    Ping statistics for
    Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 989ms, Maximum = 1192ms, Average = 1048ms

Not bad for peak time, will usually be 220Mbps outside peak times.

Upload speed pisses me off on Virgin.

Sigh. I said upload. Short version. Virgins speed ratios always used to be 10:1

The service was designed back in the day to deliver tv. So upload was never really designed into it. As the system gets over subscribed the upload speeds have took a hit over the years are rarely increase.

And trust me I’ve had my share of troubles with them. 18 months ago the service was unusable at peak times. Couldn’t even use YouTube let alone Netflix. Over subscribed area. I’m just lucky they fixed it fast. (By fast I mean it took 3 months, drew me using piracy outside of peak hours so I had stuff to watch) One of the advantages of the old Birmingham cable system before it became telewest and eventually VM is that it’s neen pretty well maintained. Just have no chance getting it anywhere that’s been built in the last 15 years as they haven’t laid any new cable for yonks.

Yes I know but your download figure is over ten times faster than some people! It's unbelievably quick. Just think about that...
