Let's Salute The Magic Of Arsequake / Pigfuck / Whatever It's Called Music!

I thought of them today when I bought some Polyfilla-type stuff today called Crack Attack.

Apart from the usual suspects (-with The Butthole Surfers clearly top of the pile by a long stretch), I don't think there were actually that many others, were there?

Er...

Swans (-early stuff)
Scratch Acid/Jesus Lizard?
Terminal Cheesecake
The Walking Seeds
Beme Seed
Godflesh

<?>

Now: Shit & Shine.

Now you're just winding me up about the fact I haven't transcribed my vinyl.

my terminal cheesecake tshirt is nearly transparent, mind.

You're so transparent, pk :)

And you're STILL following me around. :)

It's kinda flattering

Yes! You're right of course!!

Pigfuck!! Arsequake!!

Get a grip Dub, you've started the last four threads in this forum and despite what you might think you'll not be stopping me posting here, so why don't you do yourself a favour and put me back on ignore, ya big dollop.

I still think the Butthole Surfers at Reading '89 is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. Just absolutely WRONG! but kinda beautiful in a funny sort of way :D

That was a fantastic performance. All I can remember is sunshine, synchronised leg kicks by the guitarists, and those demented Gibbytronix. Total showmanship.

There was always a lot of dub in amongst.. erm..all the other insanity :D
The last album - King of All Spaceheads - was pretty much a dub album. But a dub album made by Hieronymus Bosch :D

It had a track called In The St. Johns Ambulance Tent, Glastonbury 1989, which was in between Black Microdot I and Black Microdot II :D

I know next to fuck all about any of this shit, but I now WANT!!!! :p

Bands are like beautiful women, imo. The world is full of them. How do I choose, how do I choose!

I say, don't worry about it, just go for a couple of them, and resign yourself to the fact that you won't ever have them all.

Wikipedia on the Butthole Surfers

And at another particularly wild concert in 1986, Haynes and Lynch reportedly engaged in sexual intercourse while on stage, as Leary used a screwdriver to vandalize the club's speakers. This came after only five songs, during which time Haynes had started a small fire

Lol. Haven't heard their stuff though, recommendations?

Most of the greats already mentioned but a few possibles - Sperm wails and silverfish - maybe a bit too straighforward? World Dom should def be in there though.

I wouldn't discount the Arsenal Eps either.

I was toying with mentioning all four of those myself, but like yourself, I couldn't decide. World Dom were fantastic, but sounded too (-wonderfully) different to fit into any particular scene then. I dunno...

I did go back and listen to some Sperm Wails last night and decided they probably didn't have the requisite autopsy film action going on... ;)

I think they were one of the ones on the border between artiness/piss-take and various other things, so yeah, prob not technically arsequake - i'm going to be having a noisy afternoon :D

There's a lot of soulseeking going to happen after this thread.

I got into killdozer as a young lad, attracted in by the communist artwork and great titles, and kept in by the wonderful growling! And of course, butthole surfers who surprised me, as they never really featured on my radar until my mid-teens when Pepper was played on MTV a fair bit. Imagine my surprise when I saw them live at Reading 96! It was apparantly an awful show but I came away a convert.

Also love Revolting Cocks, and Ministry's good days.

To me, 'arsequake' (-or whatever) is about a demented trippy (-usually rock) heaviness that's out to mess you up. (-Never considered RevCo, Ministry, etc, to be part of it, but there's a heaviness, that same twisted sense of humour, and obviously some crossover of personnel, so I suppose it does count really....) Aww, fuck it, I'm not going to quibble about the genre specifics much more... :o

Pussy Galore were much less ...er... sludgy, and more frenzied and scratchy in comparison. -More speedy than smacky?... :hmm:

I remember reading an interview with Jon Spencer about 15 years ago and he said he'd once dropped acid and listened to nothing but James Brown. I still think that's an afternoon well spent. :D

I know the name, but I've never-knowingly heard them. Think I get them mixed up with the plain old Jellyfish. (-The power-pop lot). :o

Shimmy disc band (IYKWIM) - a bit like the Daddy Longhead LP but a bit further out there. Animal Rites album a stone cold classic IMO. Fantastic live.

To be honest, it was horrible, it fucked up a lot of people ( i knew a couple of people who got caught up in that) and was really fucking scary....

it was that 'transmission 1' video that caused all that, 'starring' bee from in2a circle/getting the fear. after that mad american evangenist used footage from it to beef up her daft satanic ritual abuse documentary (later proven to be a crock of crap)

coincidentally, that SPK 'autopsy' video has just been re-released. it's funny.

early swans stuff is in a league of its own. first time they toured UK was definately thee most intense live band i have ever seen. utterly relentless and without equal.

And if we're including more frantic stuff like Pussy Galore in this, then I'm nominating Bogshed.

Not heavy, but they ticked the boxes in terms of scratchy frenzy and speedy/acid weird/funny lyrics. I remember them covering Benny Hill's 'Gather In The Mushrooms' at one point. :D

as with most genres those who are the true progenitors are invariably overlooked in favour of those with a more 'marketable' angle.

anyone into this sort of stuff should really check out Ramleh. :)
