Let's all talk about the Conference

Erm ... not on yesterday's sorry performance from York, I'm afraid, Oryx!

Oxford pissed all over York throughout yesterday's match (I was there  ), without Oxford being particularly brilliant themselves :)

Sounds like fun and games on Saturday:

Police Use Batons To Stop Fans Fighting

Anything to do with you WoW?????? Only joking of course.

I suspect I know a lot of the faces, as it were, involved. There's been a sizeable number of hooligans attending Oxford games for a few years without anything obvious happening to prevent their activities.

Missed all of this.

Saw a good few coppers around, but had no idea til later what had been going on.

One rumour was that there were Oxford 'faces' gathering in the Priory (pub by the ground, non Oxford fans!) and that a crew of York headbangers went in search of them -- after kickoff!!! --- with inevitable results ... not sure where the Police were at that stage -- they appeared in numbers later on.

On topic and weird fact : not a single player in the top twelve scorers in the Conference plays for Oxford United

I don't understand this. How can Oxford be top without having had anyone score?

I missed out a key word :o (now edited, in bold).

I find it hard to understand too ... we haven't tended to win by big margins, and we must be scoring from all sorts of positions ...

Second, Weymouth still have massive crowds and cash to burn....

I don't know what their average home gate is -- do you?

Ours are surely bigger by some distance. Saturday's was 6,602 including just under 500 York fans. I think we've had very few home crowds this season under 5,500.

They have played some good matches though, Weymouth, and both they and Dagenham could be threats to us over the long run.

I'm respecting Donna's wishes on the rest of your posts.

But you couldn't resist a last word anyway?

Weymouth get far lower gates than yours. Not surprising, given they've never been in the football league, let alone the top flight.

Since they ousted Ridley though I think they're more than capable of going up - they still have cash to burn (and the best squad imo - though lots of them are there just for the money).

They were getting an average of 1,400 two leagues lower than the Conference National.

It's not a crowd rivalry thing -- our own circumstances are unusual. I was just questioning 'massive'.

I'd be happy to see bigger crowds at all lower level clubs. Anything in the mid 1000s upwards is pretty good at this level.

I was less aware they had plenty of money. They must be one of the few Conf clubs who have. Oxford have some, now Nick Merry's in charge, but I don't know much detail yet.

Grays did. Canvey Island used to obviously. And Rushden were the ones before them.

The money (and Steve Claridge being player-manager) was what built them from a nothing club to contenders. I hate them - and loved beating them 3-2 at their place to stop them going up a year earlier.

But they've definitely got 'massive' crowds for where they've come from.

Another club who get big crowds are Crawley - but that's because there's no other big football team for miles (I presume Farnborough, who've had some fall from grace (including our best win in history in round 1 of the FA Cup a few years ago), are the nearest).

Oxford should go up, but non-league sides have purple patches and stinking ones more than higher league clubs (often based around one or two players) it seems.

Crawley have always had decent crowds. Remember seeing their busses in the late 80s and asking my day who the hell they were.

Where the hell is Crawley anyway?

I know, Brighton is the nearest pro club.

It's in the middle of Hants/ Surrey/ Sussex if you see what I mean.

MAssive Tesco/ M&S there. Or was that Camberley?

"The Reading of the Conference"

(meaning for us, rivalry wise :D ;) as was stated in thoose words to me by a longstanding Oxford fan in the pub on Saturday .. actually that's a little bit too complimentary on reflection!! But they are our closest fellow-Conference team geographically )

Not a fan either, but if they've held Dagenham to a draw, that'd help us :)

Their fans are (or were when we were in the same league) bitter nasty twats who still accuse us of cheating because our manager didn't want to play a game without a linesman.

I thought you were Everton? When were they in the same league as Stafford Rangers?

He's also Weston "Super" Mare.

And this one's still pissed off at the shock we pulled off against them several years ago - scoring from 40 yards with a minute left away and then beating them at home.

Out muscled, out fought and out played (and yes, I'm living in the past).

Wrong!!!! (ly predicted by me, that is ;) )

Blimey! Picked up on this result late ...

Oxford were on the brink of their first defeat last night - against Southport, who are quite near the bottom. 2-2! Oxford's equaliser was in the 90th, both goals Duffy, both goals penalties ...

Official Oxford report here (there isn't one on the fan site yet).

Is Duffy really looking all that for you? He was with us first month or so of last season, and looked like he could have played a month without scoring - what gives?

Who's 'us' (maybe I missed that, earlier :o )

He's alright. Has a good manager now in Jim Smith, and seems goal hungry at the moment ... scored our first (very well) against York on Saturday.

Heh, Cambridge. Typical bloody Newman, great at bringing talent in but totally clueless when it comes to getting them playing together. Our latest next big thing Liam Marum (18, free from Reading, 3 goals in 4) was on the way out of the club with one start at right back when Newman was sacked - Jimmy Quinn seems a lot more capable.
