Part of the reason twitter works is because quite a lot of journalists pay attention to it. I speculate that this is because:

Journalists can be lazy
They can be reasonably sure that its an issue their audience may care about
They can get some celebrity opinions on the matter to spice things up

A presenter on LBC this morning argued homophobia was in decline given the number who protested at moir's article.

What's wrong with that, it is in decline.

Over the past year, the number of attacks against gay men and women in London has risen nearly 20 per cent, and in a recent survey 90 per cent of the gay men and women questioned said they had experienced homophobic insults and abuse.

But that is probably beacuse people are more likely so report homophobic attacks now, cos they know the police will take them seriously.

In the 1970s everyone was homophobic - even the homosexuals!
