Part of the reason twitter works is because quite a lot of journalists pay attention to it. I speculate that this is because:

Journalists can be lazy
They can be reasonably sure that its an issue their audience may care about
They can get some celebrity opinions on the matter to spice things up

Fair point, apologies. It was a rushed out post focused on the internet side of things with too much jargon.

Danny, you raise some very interesting points there, especially on the Guardian/liberal-friendly aspect of this issue in contrast with other recent 'complaint magnets'.
 
I don't think it is. Let me use an article from the Mail (:D) to illustrate my point.
But that is probably beacuse people are more likely so report homophobic attacks now, cos they know the police will take them seriously.

In the 1970s everyone was homophobic - even the homosexuals!
