But one thing always gets in the way of the other - the music or the lyrics, so I always favour the music cos that's what got me listening before anyone opened their mouth
I agree the music's most important. But if one gets in the way of the other, then one or other hasn't worked!

I can understand you not being interested in Len's lyrics if you don't like his music. That's the correct response.

This is why I prefer electronic music - you don't have to worry about all that - you just dig the textures

You're doing it wrong:

"This is why I prefer electronic music - you don't have to worry about all that - you just dig the textures, MAAAAAAN"

It isn't really a worry. It works like this: "I don't like that music. Whether it has lyrics or not".

The same process applies with electronic music.

A couple of comments:

Cohen: far better on the page than in the ears-- poetry, not lyrics, is his genius.

And if it has to be in the ears, he's far better interpreted by actual singers. Bird on the Wire, even by a Judy Collins, is preferable to the dirge Cohen makes it.

He's notorious for ripping off melody lines from people far more musically-talented then himself. Dance Me to the End of Love is an old Romany tune.

Hallelujah: k.d. lang OWNS that song. End of.

Oh Jesus, yes. But the question was crap or not crap. And he is absolutely not crap.

I was trying to be clever with a reference to his 'Tower of Song'. ;)

'I said to hank williams: how lonely does it get?
Hank williams hasnt answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me
In the tower of song'

Definately a not crapper over here.

Hank would be far far better if he didn't wear a fucking cowboy hat and do that yodeling thing.

Leonard Cohen isn't a hippy, he's more of an old beatnik. He is Charles Bukowski only this Charles Bukiwski is at peace with himself and his guitar.

I prefer the Nick Cave version, have you heard it?

im sure i have....but nothing beats this

beautiful soul...they never usually hang around long, once in a while they do. :-)

Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen are in an aeroplane which is spiralling out of control....BANG!...three dead hippies. Fucking A1. Top piloting.

itd be a far bigger loss than if i dunno say, blak flag and henry rollins some some other tonedeaf screamers met the same fate...(i dont wish it on anyone, but itd be a much greater loss to the world of music if dylan & cohen were to meet that fate than most...)

theres nothing wrong with a cowboy hat

or yodeling :p....

Hasn't nearly eveyone done a better veriosn of Hallelujah than Cohen? (Apart from KD lang - she does it all Lisa Minelli - its on you tube if you want to punish yourself)

Great song - but why the fuck does he put those piss awlful 80s synth sounds all over them?

Actually a lot of Cohens arrangements are dreadful. Its probably a tribute to his genius that the songs still come through.

Can't get enough of LC

Always like him since I first heard him on Natural Born Killers when I was about 15 but it is only the past couple of years I have really got into him and moreso of late. Think he's starting to go in my top ten best people ever, may even surpass Joan of Arc and Ripley.

In all honesty, we are insects and cohen is god.

I believe the bittersweet tones of Chelsea Hotel to be my current fave, althogh you can never get tired of Suzanne

Leonard Cohen Genius

No one read any of his books, Spice Box Of Life(poetry), Beautiful Losers?:hmm:
Learnt to play Suzzanne on guitar, first claw hammer, fingure pick.

There was a thread on here about a year ago on LC.
Is'nt he supposed to be touring U.K. soon?

I've just been listening to his Live in London album. Didnt' seem worth a new thread, but it did seem worth posting - no new songs I think but the best live album I've heard for years :)

Is that because it's on Spotify by any chance?

I found myself listening to it a little while ago too. I was disappointed that the recording doesn't seem to be of the London gig that I went to, but the later one.
