Lenovo value range...

You should only buy Lenovo from lenovo really..
They sell online & offer very good warrenty & the customer service is excellent.

Seems strange to buy a product from a trader if you can get it direct.

I bought my netbook from Lenovo, it took just over a week to arrive.

That was my only 'criticism' of buying through them, as you can get next-day delivery elsewhere.

Maybe people are after cashback or something? :D

yup
this was my only reason for going through eBuyer - Next Day delivery (ordered at 9pm - in my living room at 10am next day!)

I emailed Lenovo with questions and they reckoned they were taking about 10 days when I was thinking of ordering - decision made.

Plus the eBuyer discount on the Lenovo price made it only £3 more to order from eBuyer with mega quick delivery :)

I got exactly the same product with the same warranty but much quicker

Quite. When I read your post I decided the machine sounded quite good so decided to look it up and then saw those reviews, and decided I wasn't going to go for that :D I was wondering if you had ended up buying something you hadn't intended to buy because of similarly wrong specs!

Naughty Amazon, and still haven't corrected their mistake

I know - crap huh

I always compare and contrast on a few websites when buying summat like this though - just in case...just like in a real shop(s)

Well you obviously got what you're after. Are you happy with it?

Nobody's told me how it compares to an Acer 5536 yet?

I'd think it unlikely anyone's got both!

:D well yeah

my wife's cousin's husband  has an acer that looks very similar, dunno if it is the exact same model though, anyway, after looking at the spec on techradar, the 5536 has more 'stuff' (sd card reader, hdmi, an extra usb, express card slot/port are NOT on my Lenovo). The main thing for me with his Acer is the fact that I (and the owner) both despise the touchpad. Have a look at one in PC World- there are a few Acer models with the same design, the touchpad is a dip in the plastic chassis rather than a hole that has a touchpad unit inserted into it (like this) You really need to go and try one to see if it'd suit you, or not. I much prefer the Lenovo keyboard too.

It depends whcih you're looking at -post the spec up here or a link and we'll all berate it for you! :) The main comment that stuck in my mind about ACER from this board was someone with a 6 week old machine that had died and the response was along the lines of 'well what do you expect - its an Acer'
That really put me off - probably without good reason - but I crossed them off my list. I am skint therefore build quality and the OS lasting longer was important to me. Therefore Lenovo, Win7 and a dual core of some description were important for me. I write mainly, don;t game or use photoshop etc so graphics cards are not important, neither was hdmi. I used a few Lenovo machines and liked the keyboard so I ordered one.

The reviews I've seen of the Acer all have Athlon x2 processors - dunno if they compare well to the PDC in the Lenovo - bigger brains need to answer that. They have all had Vista in some form too - dunno whether that is a concern for you or not. But, isn't Vista more of a power hog?, again, bigger brains along soon I imagine.

And, the lenovo battery life has been consistently over 4 hours in tests with wifi use - the reviews of the 5536 I've googled state 3hrs or under in the main. Again, is that important to you?

AND, replacement batreries, from Lenovo, official ones, are approx £80 for this laptop - unlike my wifes £300 Dell where a battery was over £140 from Dell!

Look into that - batteries degrade and are considered consumables by the manufacturer. Also, cheapo Chinese etc replacements can be dodgy, so cheaper replacements (or spares for 8 hours use in the library) was important to me in the long run.

I do miss not having an sd card slot but I use that once or twice a week for 10 minutes ata time, so a 99p adapter ain't a hardship. I never use three usb ports at once never mind four.

Just go to PC World and ask to use an Acer with the same touchpad and keyboard as the one in the piccy above - if you hate using that in the shop, it'll grate on you every time you use yours at home/work I reckon.

I hope that was some use. Mike likes his Acer, just not the touchpad. This is his first laptop and was using Win98 and XP before this in his loft based desktop. He is still giddy with excitement over having WiFi and a hard drive that is greater in number than his age.

pip pip

oh
just remembered
the battery also has a one year warranty
this is unusual in my experience
batteries normally get 6 or 9 month warranties on new laptops or at least that used to be the case
or has that changed now?

Lenovos are very tough machines, I've got an old Thinkpad which has been dropped onto a concrete floor more times than I can remember and plonked in the back of a rucksack every day but keeps plodding on. The worst that's happened is that the hard drive came loose and I threaded the screw on the cover when I put it back in, so it's now held in place with a bit of gaffer tape. I'm really clumsy and don't think a standard laptop would have lasted more than a month or so.

These aren't nearly as robust in feel to the old Thinkpads, like the T60 I'm typing on.

That's not to say that it's not a bad deal, but the build quality of the value line ain't quite the same.

Minnie still hasn't gone to check that Acer trackpad out for herself, has she?
:D

I don't know why you're talking about trackpads

That's the built-in mouse isn't it? :o

I don't use them things. I use a mouse with a tail. If a trackpad is the mouse, I would disable it. I hate the things.

BUMP

Is it possible that ever since Throbbing Angel's original post in December that the laptop he bought has INCREASED in price? I thought these things are supposed to get cheaper!!

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...y&issCategory=/Notebooks/Value Line notebooks

I bought the £399 version for £399

different model?

I think there's a few of the same model but with different specs. I looked when you originally bought it. I think one had a Core 2 Duo and something like 4GB Ram etc. and was £200 more

This is very odd. After my post from last night, it seems that the price has been changed to £399 (last night it was nearly £450).

Anyway, looking at this laptop is it powerful enough for decent video-editing?

How you doing with your Lenovo TA?

I'm still dithering, although I'm wondering whether to go for the G550 with higher specs so I can have card reader/HDMI etc. (Not that the card reader is really important as it probably won't take XD or SDHC cards) :D

Sorry, months late I know - I was on a sabbatical from U75 foe a few months - anyway - if you haven't sorted yourself out by now - yeah, the G550 is still going strong and I think the addition of SD card reader and bluetooth would have been useful (for me) HDMI not so much. I can dongle myself up for SD and BT though so, no worries, when I need them, which ain't often

i have a lenovo netbook, and it is small and cute, looks a bit like a kids toy. but i've had it for a year and often carry it loose in a rucksack. its fine.

Nice to see you again. I have an SD card reader and bluetooth on my laptop. Unfortunately my camera takes an XD card :D

(I ended up getting a Samsung)

Lenovo is generally great for our business, at least the thinkpad and thinkcentre range, but they are more business orientated I think. Although we have had a couple of not so great models in the thinkpad range recently, most notably the SL range which we're not that impressed with.

I bought a Lenovo ideapad and I love it to bits. It is my sole computer (not at work though...very clunky old PC at work).

 fkn XD card :) Glad you got sorted anyway

I bought a 2nd laptop and an ipod touch since, so my G550 is used as my main machine at home (only). The x41 goes out and about to library etc and if I get a BT keyboard for the iTouch, I can write on that quite happily too!

All good

This older IBMs, jesus, built like a tank - great piece of kit

the ideapads arn't quite as solid as the thinkpads but they are very nice laptops

still a cut above a dell or similar (and i'm not saying dells are bad or anything)

They've picked up good reviews, but I'd still go for something like a s/hand ThinkPad X200.
Hmmm yeah, I've noticed you raving about those (and like me you had a Vaio for years n years so I trust yer judgement), but as I'll be back in Burma - land of very limited technology - next week, I reckon I'll be better off getting somehting new.

Just PM'd you btw :)

If you're taking it abroad, maybe something a little more robust than Lenovo's value range is wise?

I've mentioned the frame flexing a little in my PM.

I'm generally at home and this laptop stays at home all the time. I bought a 2nd hand IBM x41 tablet (12.1in screen) for taking to the library/out and about. It feels so much more solid than the G550.
But, the x41 is much older and was built for road warriors and was £2k new  so I'm not surprised that the case/frame is more robust.

Remember - v a l u e range
