It was horribly wet and cold. About as wet as Leatherhead on the August bank holiday two seasons ago but a lot colder and the pitch didn't hold up as well. To be fair to them though it had been raining non stop for several hours.
Their goal was from a low cross from the right which was clipped in from a near post run by Christy Finch after 7 minutes.
Despite the conditions we did try to play our way back into it by keeping it on the ground. Our goal followed a fairly extended period of pressure and was really well taken by Kevin James. A good interchange of passing ended with him on the edge of the box in a bit of well worked space from where he put his shot low to the keeper's left into the corner of the net.
At least we didn't lose and we certainly showed character in fighting our way back into the game. Leiston had precious few chances after scoring early on. Their sporadic attacks usually came from breaks when we had been committing more players to attack in pushing hard for an equaliser and then a winner.
Having said that we didn't generate many clear cut chances either. Lots of good passing play at times but not much that led to clear strikes on goal - a fairly familiar story of late bar the last two or three games.
I stayed up there to the Sunday which was an absolutely glorious day. Can't help feeling that a drier pitch would have suited us better. Ho hum.
On the whole I'd say that was a point gained rather than two dropped. Leiston are no mugs, they defend doggedly and we've beaten them only once in six games since returning to the Premier Division, while they look like finishing in 9th place for the third season running. It's not results and performances like this that have cost us the championship.
The weather and pitch conditions made the game a war of attrition, not helped by a referee who ignored minor yet obvious infringements by defenders in the final third whilst penalising forwards for the slightest physical contact. Drage & Akinyemi might have made a positive difference at each end and maybe enabled us to sneak a win. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Moss that the number 9 shirt went to debutant Lawrence Yiga instead of him. I felt Yiga did reasonably well and his size and strength were suited to the conditions, if not the aforementioned interpretation of the Laws by this particular referee. He played at centre back against us for Canvey, but showed the mobility, awareness and touch to do a capable job up front. I thought Beaney did very well in a cameo appearance from the bench.
