'Legacy' clothes - ones you have, ones you'll pass on

I collected 1940's dresses when I was an art student. You could still get them cheaply then.

Some fell apart, but I've still got some of them and miss mania has started to show an interest in them.

I also have 2 faux beaver lamb fur ccoats circa 1950, I often wear them. They belonged to my MIL (deceased).

Also a lovely brown swagger coat that belonged to a friend's mum. I would never get rid of it.

Obviously I like wearing dead women's clothes

Oh I forgot to add that I found lots of camisoles and petticoats, babies' nighties and such in the attic here.

I soaked them in that whitening stuff and they came up beautifully (all hand made)

Miss wears the camisoles a lot - I am too fat to get into them.

this is even more confusing to me than the concept of legacy clothes. Is it a beaver? is it a lamb? if its a lamb why is it fur and not wool? could it be a beaver sheep hybrid? is it neither because its faux? wtff!

I do not own any clothes that would survive long enough to be passed on or be wanted by any younger people I would imagine. I think my Mum used to have couple of pairs of really really tight shiny lycra (?) trouser things from the late 70's early 80's. Apparently she had to lie on the floor and get a friend to do them up for her. Not sure if she's still got them now but they were never going to fit me :D

Beaver lamb has a texture a bit like one of those slightly shaggy (man mad)fleeces.

I know it isn't real beaver lamb because one of them is petrol blue and the other is cream, and anyway they are obviously woven if you look at them closely.

They are nice coats.

Honest.

hehe Im sure it's lovely

but what is a beaver lamb!!! ...ah ha! its got its own website. It is lamb skin treated to be more beaver like. Perfect sense :D

Yeah, me too and I thought that as well... All these people having 'staycations' and wearing their 'legacy' clothes, what next? :D
Blimey, it's not some media buzzword or anything - I just thought it was a convenient way to describe briefly clothes you might inherit or else want to keep for the future. That's allowed, isn't it? ;)

It just sounded, I don't now, grander than I'd use off the top of my head - y'know, like 'legacy' is something I'd associate with the effects of a political movement or period of history, something like that.

i guess my shoe collection is shaping up that way. one pair of choos and two pairs of miu miu - i should really take better care of them.:o

I thought the same but alas, daughter thinks my leather is rank. :(

i lived in my dad's leather jacket when i was in the sixth for / first year at uni. it was a 70s blazer type, and i painted daisies around all the edges. for some reason i can't think of any photos of me wearing it, which is odd - cos i more or less lived in it for three years - like that kid in east is east. my mum threw it away in the end, because it was torn in a few places.:(

My Ravers suck t shirt

proper old skool sk8 wear, given to me from my best mate for my 18th birthday.

I doubt it'll last another 15 years tho

I just know them as 'hand-me-downs' but I guess, 'Legacy clothes' sounds posher. :D
Well, I'd think of hand-me-downs as sibling to sibling and what I'm talking about is more parent to child, so a bit more special. It's not just passed on because it's there and it's cheaper than buying new clothes - it's kept hold of for long periods to make sure someone gets it because it's felt to be extra nice/meaningful/cool.
