Lee Perry

Saw lee perry back in 2001 with the Mad proffesor. Excellent night! he did have a highly annoying MC with him though.

I saw him at the Hackney Empire about 15 years ago. He was so pissed he could hardly stand let alone sing. They escorted him from the stage after about 10 minutes. Pathetic it was.

More likely stoned than pissed but it's not unusual for him to be off his nut on something or other.

As to the OP, I am very fond of the Trojan Upsetters box set, but Perry's later work, like reggae from the mid 70's and onwards, leaves me cold.

Now that is someone worth seeing. Only ever saw him once, many years ago, but his live dubbing and mixing was incredible. Really lived up to expectations.

I had heard he was doing some stuff from his LA base in the last year or so but hadn't heard he was coming over this way. Got details?

He's playing as Scientist aka Hopeton Brown - Dub Show for the Dublime showcase at Bloc Weekend. Other acts are Mad Professor, Pole, Ed Rush & Optical, Kode 9, Tipper, Plastician and <spits in disgust> Zion Train.
I can ask how they booked him if you want?

Saw him in Liverpool a few years ago... he was on about an hour later than the band; and when he did come on stage he thought he was in Manchester :D

They did do a v.cool version of ferry cross the mersey though

Joining those who've said he's awful live. Saw him play some good ones many years ago but he's raddled and boring these days.

I thought the set he did at Endorse It was the best I'd seen him do. Normally he just loons about the stage doing a few mild versions of more recent stuff. The Endorse It set was just a 30 min improvised jam and I thought it was great.

Totally agree, although that was probably becasue it was not his propper band... 'Bison' and 'The Big' jamming if i remeber rightly.

Love all that early black ark stuff etc, some of the best reggae ever made. On-U made some great stuff, but not really sure On-U meets Lee Perry really worked.

Seen perry live several times and he just seems totally mad ..... which is fine, but does not reflect the genius of the early dub days. The Endorse It jamming thing was a step back towards proper dubbing it up.

Saw him in Leeds last month and it were bloody brilliant! The band were excellent. They played mostly the more famous riddims (curley locks, black panta/bucky skank, etc.) with Scratch chatting over the top. The audience seemed completely captivated and you could tell him and the band were having a great time. One of the best gigs I've been to.

My mate, not given to emotion much, saw him a few years back and burst into tears when he walked on.

I was playing "Cow thief skank" & "Stay dread" on the train at 7.30 this morning.
