Leaving the washing machine on while you're out

I do, Ive only ever known one person have something happen when he did this, his washing machine came loose and vibrated itself away from the wall, taking with it the cold water supply( switched to On obv) and flooding his flat and his neighbours:o whoops

That's a bit, er, obsessive.

We do it all the time. We also leave roasts cooking in the oven and go out.

Even my grandmother used to do that.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a washing machine exploding. What brand do you own?

It's hardly obsessive to not do washing while we're out. It's not like I sit there watching the machine when it's on. And I provided 3 cites above of washing machine fires - just google washing machine fire and you'll get plenty of hits. And as I also said above, for me it's also about not wasting energy - sure it's not a huge amount, but if we all did it for two washes every week it would be.

Well, of the three the first was a tumble dryer and the last was in somewhere like Texas, so you're looking quite widely for your two examples.

I don't really know how you measure the probability of a washing machine malfunction and compare it with other appliances like a tv or computer - I suppose the Fire Brigade keep data on that.

I'll say it again, in bold, for those that are missing it - A fire is very unlikely. It's mainly about energy-saving.

I only do 3-4 loads a week anyhoo.....sometimes less all on one day !

Can't get my head round people doing 2 loads a day (unless they have a large family of course)

I hate leaving any electrical stuff on when I'm asleep/out of the house - makes me feel irrationally nervous :o

we do 2 loads a day, sometimes 3 but we are a family of 5 and the kids swim and do other activities which generates kit, extra towels, tracksuits etc which need washing on top of normal daily clothing, bedding and towels

You can say it as loudly as you like but all the while your OP begins with this:

"Do you? We used to but now we're too paranoid about it exploding or burning down the flat, and also don't want it to be sitting flashing and saying "I'm done!" for hours and using energy"

People will be inclinded to think you're paraniod about it exploding or burning down your flat, and also . . .

Think felix has 2 sporty teens though. So if they all shower in the mornings before school/work, then again after sports they'll probably dump wet towels at their arses which will then need washed.
My daughter only uses a bath towel once before washing it. She justifies this by saying 'but I dry my hair with it too'

I don't see how something that has been used to dry a clean thing can then be dirty after one use but I don't do her washing anymore so heyho :D

We must be scums then, i certainly don't wash towels after one use and i don't wash any clothes daily.......

you wash bedding every day ????????

I never knew that as well, although I've recently been informed that leaving unattended washing machines is one of the, if not the leading, cause of house fires. Which makes the name 'Hotpoint' seem a little more ill advised than most.

Oh god, I've had a fear about this for ages now! I have been struggling to ignore it on the grounds that Im just being paranoid because I've been putting the washing machine on before leaving for work in the morning for years. Now it seems that I've just been lucky to date......

I think I should just resign myself to listening to the damn thing wash, and waiting for it to finish, which I've been doing for quite a while now anyway :(

this is all my ex-husband's fault, he used to go garretty if I left anything unnecessary plugged in at all, made me completely paranoid and Im still trying to get over it. Slipping with the washing machine, and although I still seem to be Ok with the kettle, definitely not with the toaster.......

Having had 2 floods in our kitchen last year caused by leaking things I would never run anything using water while out.

Yeah, if we're not going to be long I'll stick it on. It is vile when you leave it in there for ages and it smells all sewer-y though!

I repeat - it is not one of the leading causes of house fires!

It quite often doesn't matter anymore :(

Its a real pain cos I often get in after 9.30 and I really don't want to put it on at that time of night - I live in a flat, I have neighbours, washing machine is old & VERY noisy - and I begrudge being in at the weekend to do stuff like that.

Sometimes I can put it on before I go out. I will try harder, bearing the above in mind. *crosses fingers - and unplugs the toaster*
