Learning to drive!

Congrats KE! Bet that's a brilliant feeling!

I'm swotting for my Theory at mo. Then got an instructor lined up to assess me and block book intensive course. *gulp*

Indeed, and I can't fucking wait!

i find it hard to remember what it was like (passed in 97) do you have to have one of those green 'P' plates on the car? always thought they were a bad idea, advertising that you are a new driver, it was nerve-wracking going out without an instructor next to me, and making my own driving decisions  but after a while, it becomes natural

Theory's a piece of piss, it's just memory recall, but passing it makes you feel good and a lot more confident in passing the practical. Good luck!!

I'm having trouble with the hazard perception. I think it's mostly to do with knowing when / how much to click - I'm perfectly confident that I'm aware of everything in the video!

It is! I did that and it was baffling at first, I kept clicking when I saw a hazard but was too quick off the mark and the software didn't recognise it!

CONGRAULATIONS KE have you been out by yourself much?

I have my practical test booked....for June! which is bloody miles away - but the snow buggered up the bookings pushing everything back. I'm going to try and get a cancellation, will be doing some mock tests with my instructor :D

I really wish I could drive now - it would make my life so much easier

Well done  I always wanted to learn but even if I did I can't afford a car and don't think I'd drive much anyway in London - I don't think I have the confidence to try now.

Thanks KE! :)

I've got the PC cd thing. Tis good.

No probs, yeah that's what I had...

Nope, not yet but not worried, I'm a very confident driver, and more importantly I enjoy driving which I think for me was a big factor in doing well. June aint that far away trust me, it's like 12 weeks which is nothing really it'll fly by!

I wont have one any time soon (gotta save a bit and ideally want want which is a bit 'greener' than the rest) but I'm sure I'll get some road time in. I live in London too, but wanted the skill and the ability to do things like rent cars while on holiday etc. I'm very happy to have passed first time, really hated the thought of having to re-take (I'm not the most patient person ever).

Confidence for me is down to factors like knowing the area I learnt in, enjoying the experience and having a great instructor I got on well with. The last part I think really helped. You spend a lot of time with someone who's teaching you so you gotta be comfortable with them so you can be comfortable with yourself in some ways.

My instructor puts kisses at the end of text messages she sends me and she makes me sit on a pink cushion and sometimes she feeds me sweeties :D shes a bit nuts tbh :D

Lucky you, sounds like you'l get a girlfriend and a drivers license out of that. :D

Just seen this. Congratulations on passing, and first time as well!

I hope you do manage to get some driving time in because it's now that you'll build your confidence up, especially driving on your own. Also try to get some motorway driving in as well.

Yep. although I reckon i'll be fine. Regarding motorway driving can't wait, getting on dual carriage ways was a blast!

it is quite scary the first time you get on a motorway, but you quickly get used to it, and it does become fairly dull driving once you're used to it, A roads are much better to drive on imo. more to see, better places to stop, plus you can play pub cricket:cool: runs for the legs in the pub name , the lamb and flag would get you 4 legs, wicket down if there are no legs, the crown for example, motorways are piss poor for pub cricket

You need to get yourself out to the countryside... So much fun.

Having said that, if you do end up on twisty b-roads etc be very careful to start with - it's a totally different technique to driving in town... I did my test when I was down in Devon, so got used to it, but basically it's a case of looking a long way ahead of you and picking up on visual clues that you wouldn't normally notice. And obviously you never want to overdo it, even when you feel confident (especially when you feel confident really).

Oh the other thing about driving in the country is be vary wary of overtaking; accidents can often be caused by misjudging the amount of open road you have in relation to speed.

Had my third driving lesson tonight; it's going well I think, he felt I was ready to go out onto Holloway Road which was a bit freaky but very cool! :D Managed it well, and really enjoyed it out on a busy road.

Tonight a bunch of kids playing nearby kicked a football out into the road (was going down Tufnel Park Road) which then bounced off another car and hit mine (followed by me thinking please god none of them leap out in front of me), then onto Holloway Road and come up behind two cyclists. Man alive that was a nervous moment, I slowed right down and kept about twenty feet away from them!

Anyone else learning to drive at the mo, how's it going?

You're already fully driving around after 3 lessons? That's pretty good going :)

It took me about 2 lessons just to come to grips with the clutch and gears!

I've had about 28 now and reckon I'm starting to near taking a test.

Can't wait to pass. You don't realise how necessary it is in Britain til you leave London

My instructor informs me that the actual hazard perception test is much easier than the one on the various CDs.

Now that there's me, my wife and son, it would actually be cheaper for us to have a car, especially once the litt'un starts needing to pay fares.
