there's one just up the road from you on Brixton Hill just past New Park Road

Star Driving School 0800 056 0692

£20 an hour

seems reasonable but tbh i don;t know if they're any good but i keep meaning to try them cos i'm so crap at parking in tight spaces that i could do with an hour or two refresher

Not the cheapest, but when I learned it was with the AA Driving School. There are two grades of instructor - those with their provisional instructing certificate, and those with the full certificate (can't remember the exact terminology). BSM and most other driving schools accept instructors at provisional level, AA all have the full certificate. I passed my test first time, but did have trillions of lessons.

ianw: let us know how you get on. Both hipipol and I need to relearn to drive. Trouble is without access to a car to get loads of practise with, learning to drive soley in the company of an instructor could get be well long-winded and therefore expensive in total.

Back when I was living in Wales for a bit, I took some lessons whilst getting a shedload of driving practise with anyone who was prepared to be driven. Unfortunately failed my test, then moved back to Brixton where I've never had the need to drive.

Finding an instructor you feel comfortable with has got to be half the problem solved. I came to dislike mine and dreaded lessons with him, though quite enjoyed driving with anyone else in the car.

What about these intensive courses, learn to drive in one week - are they any good?

Tip for anyone who is learning to drive in Brixton (you will probably have to go to South Norwood test centre to actually sit your test).
I recently taught my other half to drive and we discovered that due to the Freedom of Information Act (I think this is the reason anyway) the DSA are legally obliged to send you details of all of the test routes used by the examiners at your test centre.
We got the 13 routes they use emailed to us by a nice lady from the DSA, plotted the routes on an A-Z and drove round South Norwood so much I'll never want to go back again for a very long time - but he did pass first time!

Anyway, hope this helps!

Got no contacts, but just to add:

- If you can drive in Brixton, then driving anywhere else in the UK will hold NO problems for you - our borough holds the prize for erratic / eccentric / just plain illegal driving technique. so your defensive driving skills will be fully honed. if your driving instructor is any good you'll also be fully trained in moody cutting-people-up manoevres, reversing down narrow alleyways, and avoiding stoned/druk/mad pedestrians.

- DO NOT ALLOW your instructor to take you around central brixton (particularly Station Road) at the weekends 'for a laugh' to see how well you can cope with unexpected hazards. You may well end up in a machete wielding argument ... if you actually get to move the vehicle at all.

- Make sure you get out of Brixton at some point to do plenty of practice on roads / dual carriageways with speed limits of 40 / 50 mph, and also it's worth paying for one extra session on the motorway - believe me you don't want to be out there alone for your first time going over 70. (Or 80, if like mine your instructor is an ex Brixton bus driver.)

other than that best of luck to you mate.

I think there should be a separate test for Brixton which seems to have a completely different set of rules for driving.... :D

I passed with BSM inthe summer (2005). They were great. Well, I don't know about BSM genrally but the chappie that took me was. Don't want to put his name here but let me know if you're still looking.
