I think learning languages could be a waste of time if you will never live, work outside of your home town or do any kind of advanced study..

I gues that pretty much sums up how I feel about it.. I'm not convinced it is relatively that important compared to some other things.. like history which you could be spending your time improving.

Then again, I never did like languages.

learning a foreign language because you might live in another country or work in the country where that language is spoken?

This is my option. At secondry school they taught language really badly and never suggested that any of us might want to go abroad one day so it put me off learning them. But I wished I had been taught better at a younger age. Latin based languages are interesting when trying to browse through old english books like Malory's arthur.

I'll always remember going over to Germany as part of my schools exchange and a big group of us going into this classroom filled with young children that could speak much better German and English than all of us (even though we were all twice maybe three times their age)......i remember feeling absolutely ashamed.

now i know three European languages and i fancy having a go at learning a new more difficult one like Russian or Japanese.....

just knowing english really fucks your chances up of fully understanding and getting involved in other cultures!!! as they say knowledge is power...
