Le Tour de France thread

Cav didn't seem very happy in the post race interview, did he? Is he a) an unlikeable brat, or b) showing the charisma and winning attitude that British sportsmen shy away from, but is actually both exciting and necessary in order to believe you can win?

Are we to believe what Schumacher said after the win today? He didn't sound wholy convincing, but then I'm surprised the Tour let him race given how they banned Contador.

Nothing really happened today to influence the GC, but Evans did look good, quietly going about his business. It looks like being down to Valverde, Sastre, Menchov, etc to attack him in the mountains, but will he go for it himself or just ride with them in the way Indurain used to?

That was a very aggressive segment and interview on Schmumacher after his win by ITV - they must be pretty sure that he's a wrong `un to have shown that...

I missed the highlights last night. What happened?

Schumacher, fresh in yellow jersey, probably expecting a congratulatory chat with ITV, instead faced direct questioning about the amphetamines found in his blood after he was caught drink driving earlier this year. Schumacher tried to turn the interview around into a "I'm very sorry about drink driving, I will never do it again" but they didn't let go, and he didn't come across well.

According to the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefan_Schumacher) this isn't his first brush with the white stuff.

The tone of the ITV piece was that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is...

Ahh, thanks!

Great news but if Zabel had been a few years younger he would have wasted him. I thought he was finished about 3 seasons ago but he just keeps on going.

That's like saying that if Borg and McEnroa were a few years younger Nadal wouldn't have won last sunday. Zabel has had his best days, now its someone else's chance.

No because Borg wasn't on court on Sunday. If he was and had lost then I would probably say the same.
Zabel was there today and lost by a whisker.
Incredible effort at 38 when most of his contemporaries have left the pro ranks ages ago.

What impressed me about Cav today was that he lead from a long way out, not having to appear from nowhere on the line McEwan-style. Cav's not the biggest guy but Hushovd alongside him just couldn't live with his power. I really hope he gets through the mountains so he can have a pop on the Champs-Élysées.

As for Schumacher, Gary Imlach made the good point that Boonen was excluded for recreational drug use, so there does seem to be a slight lack of continuity that Schumacher is allowed to race.

Well yes it's a red tape issue though as that was a police test rather than doping control.

Zabel's always been a real pro (apart from his self-confessed doping whilst at Telecom in 1996 ) always looked after himself, so like many older sportspersons like this he's going to carry on being there or thereabouts. Look at Gilbert Duclos Lasalles (sp?) winning Roubaix, he was late 30's if not 40 (can't remember exact age), he beat riders much younger than himself. Experience counts for a lot in racing. And Cav is very young, give him a couple of years to fully develop and build strength and get more experience and he'll be the one to beat imo. The Zabel/Cippo/Abdujaperov (sp?) of the future...hopefully!

What a great finish, hard luck to Vogondy who almost held out but great stuff from Cav.

Indeed. I felt quite sorry for him until they said who had won.

:D

edit: does anyone know why Duffield isnt covering the race live as he used to? The new bloke is rubbish.

I've seen a couple of threads on other bb's that say he's not very well. Not official but considering he is nearly 80, maybe 3 weeks on the road is a bit too much for him.

I liked him, part of the fun of watching a live stage/race was him completely missing significant moves and rambling on how nowt was happening when it clearly was right there and then! Or he'd say I haven't seen wotsisface today just as wotisface attacked. Duffers ftw!

Never realised who was riding for Columbia....quite a team they've assembled. Great ride by SuperCav.

I think this is the third tour that he's missed or certainly the second one. One year they brought him in for the day to talk about the dinner he had last night, the local wine speciality and the specifications of a local fort.

Evans again looked very solid today, but he will need to attack when the real mountains emerge, because Kirchen looks like he means business too.

i enjoyed the highlights of todays stage, lots of breaks, lots of thrills and spills, disappointed that voecklers lost the kom jersey and surprised to see kirchen take yellow following schumacher falling off when he touched his wheel. millar still quite well placed atm.

Missed last nights highlights but read that Schumacher had touched a wheel and fallen in the last few hundred metres. Bit unlucky for him.

Nice lumpy stage instore today. Have got a day off today, so my remote control will be doing overtime between the cycling and the cricket :D

Dunno how I feel about Evans tbh, I liked him in his mountain biking days, but he's just a bit boring in stage races, always following and never taking the initative imo.

Is it just me or does Cadel Evans look like Steve Pemberton?
