Le Tour de France thread 2009

I saw lance's ride though and he was in 1st place by the end of it. Anyone know what's happening now or have a link to another stream?

He's third I think.

(watching Eurosport 1 - first time I have ever watched one of the sports channels.

I think I may persevere with watching this - much as the boy racers piss me off on the way to work.

If nothing else it's a way to see the country I hope to retire to - and I may just have to cycle round the place a fair bit when I get there to keep my fitness up in old age.

Finding a stream speaking English became impossible. That justin.tv place just stopped and said come back in 24hrs then I got it again but it was in Greek then Spanish :D

When that happens turn the sound down and start the Eurosport audio feed in English in a separate tab.

But it's not quite the same excitement an hour after it's finished - I was watching the weather radar at the same time.

I have to confess I already don't care who wins any of the stages.

My fantasy TdF team takes it's first stage win, and begins the tour in yellow. :)

Only one of the team outside the top 100 was Cavendish. I consider that a succesful start to my "career" as a fantasy director sportif.

Nicely done Brad Wiggins taking 3rd place. The surprises to me were Astarloza, Larsson and Nibali, who all placed much higher than I'd expect. Perhaps Astarloza may actually be the first Euskatel rider in ages to have a serious go at the GC.

Cancellara must have beasted himself in the second half of the TT, I don't think he was any faster than the race leader at the halfway point was he? Either way that was one hell of a ride. It looked like a real tricky, technical course so to be taking corners and descending at the speeds they were doing was awesome to watch (65kms/hr ). See Millar lock the back wheel up when he approached that corner too fast? Just shows how well they need to know the course before riding it in the race. Would they actually ride the course on their TT bikes before the race or just go round it in a car? Wiggins gave a good account of himself and Contador looks razor sharp doesn't he?

40.6mph and with sawblade wheels / weird handlebars..

I know, just reminds you how technical cycling is doesn't it. Quite apart from the technicality of riding the course was the fact that people kept getting over the barriers and standing in the riders path to cheer them on. Wtf was security doing to let that happen so much esp. in lance's case?

Well, I couldn't just sit and watch them, so I went off for a two hour, 25 mile meander on my ratty, over-geared mountain bike out into the nearly-country.
My tiredness almost caught up with the saddle-soreness - gawd I feel old :p
I may have to buy some of those funny shorts and a big jar of gunge. :hmm:

Though I managed to freak out several groups of youngsters near the end when I decided to thunder past them. I ought to get a dirty old mac and a pipe to complete the effect - or maybe a deerstalker and plus-fours :D

Still, I suppose it's all you can expect if your daily practice is two lots of 4 miles ...

My local scenery hardly competes - I reckon if I'd been born in France I might have taken up serious distance riding....

So that's stage 2, and my fantasy TdF team are 100% on stage wins, and hold the yellow jersey. Which isn't tremendously impressive given that it was Cancellara in a TT and Cav in a sprint.

Fantastic lead out by Columbia. I loved the way they pulled out from behind the Milram train as Milram moved across the road to counter Van Avermaet. Perfectly judged, perfect timing, and from that moment on it was all down to could anyone sprint faster than Cavendish, to which the answer is almost always "not a chance".

The head-on camera shot was quite misleading. I thought Farrar was right behind Cav, but to be honest Cav just blew him away. I've heard no mention of Petacchi as yet, or his team for that matter. Is he in it?

As for yesterday, Cancellara must've gone down the hill like a maniac, because he was fairly level at the top with Contador, Wiggins, Kreuziger, Kloeden, etc, although he did have I think Menchov as a carrot who he caught which would've helped. Kudos to Brad who really seems to have picked up the climbing bug, even if the Monaco one was only 7km or so. Unbeatable on the track for about 5 years, he's now very much holding his own on the road.

Are Astana going to blow everyone away in the Team TT? They've got Contador, Kloeden, Leipheimer and Armstrong. Saxo Bank will have to major damage limitation for when Schleck gets to the mountains.
