latest italian corruption news: prosecutor recommends relegation

La Stampa is saying Milan -9 points, Lazio & Fiore -15 points. Juve into Serie B and -15 points. Not confirmed though as far as I can tell.

La Stampa

If the above is true:

9 points dedcution for Milan would mean their season would be more fun. With Juve out of the equation they should win Serie A with Inter and Roma offering the only threat.

15 points deduction for the Viola and Lazio would mean them kissing goodbye to a top 4 finish.

Juve would be happy with Serie B and 15 points deduction. Serie C2 was talked about. If they retain the nucleus of their squad they should win promotion and have all their top players back from their one-year loans to win the Scudetto again in 2007/08.

Bottom line is all 4 teams will be relatively pleased/relieved.

The always superb James Richardson has his take on it here

...since the likely outcome is already common knowledge - Juve will go down without a fuss, having done a deal with the prosecutors to that effect, Lazio and Fiorentina will suffer stinging points deductions but remain in Serie A, and Milan will slip through with a comparatively slim penalty - the Juventus fire sale is now officially on...

Sounds like Cannavaro to Real, Buffon and Zambrotta to Meelan, Camoranesi to Inter and del Piero and Nedved to stay and go down to Serie B with a pay cut.

Hmmm, the plot thickens.....Italian papers today are saying Milan are staying in Serie A (no CL though) with the other three being relegated.....

Verdict sometime today

Have you noticed how Berlusconi has been sticking his beak into things? Totally unlike him eh?

"We can't penalise the fans. The individuals should be punished, not the clubs. Let's leave the players and the fans out of it and hit those who are really responsible, the executives and the referees.

But with a serious and fair trial, different to what we are witnessing.

I am against relegation and I don't speak just as president of Milan.

Should Juve be relegated it would hinder other clubs that would lose the revenue they take when they play against a team like Juventus.

One also has to think of the damage this would create to sponsors and televisions companies that have signed contracts with these clubs."

I wonder who owns the television companies that have signed contracts with the clubs.....

Announcement at 6PM after the stock exchange closes (seeing as Juve are a listed company).

Rumours suggest Juve have indeed done a deal to be relegated to Serie B, Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina all staign in Serie A but with 15 point deductions. I'm more interested to see how much muck sticks to Moggi as he's been the instigatpr by all accounts.

Cannavaro to Real seems like a done deal - but who's going to warm the bench if he arrives? Can see the rest of the player affectde all staying in Italy - Inter will no dobut snap a few up, but Camoranesi has to be one of the most over rated players of recent times.

The Gazzetta dello Sport is saying that Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio will be relegated to Serie B with points deductions, 20 points in Juve's case. AC Milan will stay in the top division but with a 10-15 point deduction and be kicked out of the Champions League. It's looking pretty grim for all involved.

Yeah, they also say Inter will get one of Toni, Ibrahimovich or Trezeguet by the looks of it....my Italian ain't that good, but i can get the gist usually.

La Gazetta

Wow...three over rated, over paid strikers. Lucky old Inter :D

Hey STFC can you please do your team the honour of using their full name.

It's S.S. Lazio, init?

I'm hoping Milan get relegated (despite supporting them over anyother Italian side), I wanna se Pirlo, Gatusso and Kaka move wholesale to Man Utd.

Of course I can dream on.

Ferguson will probably buy a left back from all four sides and then procede to play him in the middle of the park.

Lazio. So I'm a racist who kicks old ladies and shouts at babies, naturally...

and a cheat don't forget! ;)

I bet some of Roma's delightful hordes will be loving it you go down....oh well, we'll have to wait and see. I'm still convinced that the punishments won't be as bad as they could be, but they might well surprise me - it could be a "fresh start" for Italian footie at best.

You ever been to any Lazio games? We've talked for years of doing one of those match package things for a game one weekend...

so how exactly do you think this will affect the teams if the reports are true?

i think milan will struggle to get into the european places, especially as the "net" points for all the other teams will probably go up, as they will be playing three sides who are equal or poorer than them, rather then juve, lazio and fiorentina: will this affect any players deciding to stay at milan - the thought of no champions league for two seasons might persuade some of them to leave for clubs in the CL (or is this wishful thinking).

will juve get automatic promotion, or will they be in serie b for two seasons? 20 points is a hell of a lot of points to make up - especailly considering 46 points last term still meant that Avellino got relegated http://lega-calcio.it/ita/btim_classifica.shtml. thats 66 points and still in the relegation zone: how many players will juve be able to persuade to stay if they are going to be struggling to get automatic promotion and might be in serie b for two seasons?

what teams will go up into serie A to replace the three goign down?

If the rumours are true then it'll throw the champions league wide open. No Juve, No Milan. Those are two sides who always there or thereabouts in the final rounds.

Man Utd might even make it through to the knock out stages this season.

Its difficult to say really - we don't know how much of Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina's "success" were down to the match rigging.

When Fiorentina were relegated to Serie C2 in 2002, they came back through the leagues fairly quickly in the end.

I honestly think if Milan stay up they will have got away lightly compared to the others (although, we still don't know the exact details of the allegations for each club).

Milan finished 14 points above the final CL spot last year, so 15 points is not impossible to make up....especially with Inter and Roma as their only "real" rivals.

Lazio and Juve are massive clubs and i can't see 'em staying down for more than one season....

I've been over four times in the last couple of seasons, done the Derby twice. You should experience it at least once, there's nothing else like it.

I wouldn't bother with those packages, you can do it yourself much cheaper. Fly to Rome with Ryanair for peanuts, book a cheap hotel, and buy tickets the day before the game. €15 on the Curva Nord, unbelievable when you think how much it costs to watch a game over here.

As I understand it, Lazio and Fiore have been charged in relation to the end of the 2004/05 season, when both were battling to avoid relegation. I must admit to being totally confused about what the clubs are supposed to have done. As far as I know, no evidence of their alleged wrongdoings have been made public.

Guy i work with was in Rome and a waiter in their hotel said "fancy going to the derby?" and got them a pair of tickets for the same price as you - quality!

I would go to any Serie A game, but really fancy the Milan derby (must watch out for flying scooters ;) ) or the Rome one. The Stadio delle Alpi doesn't appeal too much though.

Thats it - nobody knows. There's no specifics of what each cub is alleged to have done in what games yet. With Juve, it was quite obvious if you watched Serie A week-in, week out that something was going on, but not the others so much....

Milan have had good results in the CL in the past few years, so its difficult to gage what the league match fixing did for them.....maybe thats why it appears they might get off lighter

Is that Silvio "I didn't say the Chinese eat babies, I said they boil them to make fertiliser" Berlusconi by any chance?

We could be in for Camoranesi, I'd rather Perotta though.

I can't see many of the players leaving Italy, hisorically they tend to stay in the country. I suspect offloading Mauro "run around a bit" Camoranesi isn't such a bad idea anyway. He looked almost as useless as Emerson at the WC.

Who do you support Sleaterkinney?

Camoranesi has come in for a lot of grief recently - can't say he impresses me much.

Did you see them cutting his ponytail off before they picked up the trophy?
