Last sweltering summer on the tube (some lines at least!!)

@oswaldtwistle

No, I meant the aircon units are mounted on the top deck, above the stairwell: they work all over the bus, although better on the upper than lower deck IME.

In New York - the subway cars are ice cold in hot weather due to effective air con - but the stations are infernos from hell as there is a problem in getting rid of the heat - and the stations arent very deep down by and large.

Solve one problem - make another ! (you can stick a station wait for about 5 mins in August!)

Ah fair enough... that makes sense. I read somewhere recently that the Victoria Line is unique in that it has a humpback design, so tunnels are designed to be uphill approaching a platform and downhill leaving, and this helps trains to brake when entering a station and accelerate when leaving, saving energy and increasing performance. Very clever 1960s engineering! :)
Pedantry:
All the tube lines do this, to some extent or another. Even the original bits (London Bridge to Stockwell) of the Northern Line, which is the oldest tube, do it. If anything, the Victoria Line is a bit less humped as the more modern machinery they had at the time of construction lessened the need for it. The original tube trains probably had to have it to get rolling.
