Just got a new battery for a new laptop. Ahhhhh :D make soooo much difference being able to fire up in the morning work on the way to the office and @still@ have enough juice for lunch time. Need a few tips to maintain it.

I know of a couple:-
Take battery out of lappy when on ac power
Drain the battery three times (dunno why but I keep hearing that)

Always let the battery drain completely if possible before recharging it. Avoids memory effect.

Doesn't happen to Lithium ion batteries which you'll find in almost all laptops now...

When on AC Power - the only risk you have battery harm is if you leave it there for too long (not sure on the science).

Of course, if you have Mac OS X, it'll automatically do a small 1% discharge every so often to prevent this being a problem... :p

Modern laptops will only trickle charge the battery when it's full, so taking the battery out does nothing. No laptop made in the last 10 years has come with a Ni-Cd battery, so memory effect is not an issue. Li-ion batteries have management chips and require no maintainence. All batteries naturally degrade and only have a useful lifespan of 1000 charge-discharge cycles. There is nothing you can do to extend this.

Um, so I can take out my old battery that's wrapped up in the freezer next to my champoin conkers? Wow - bats with chips in. The newer ones have that feature where you touch a spot and an indicator "lights" up. But like the duracell batts, if you know what I mean
