Lambeth to use lie detectors

"Voice risk analysis" is the same technology that has been used for years by insurance companies to weed out bogus claims - the first pilots of this on benefits lines were announced back in April.

Lie detectors trial to cut benefit fraud - Guardian - April 6th 2007

Well that's the line - however the insurance industry apparently doesn't use it as standard, and the science behind it is dodgy at best.

I see that they've bought it in from KPMG - I'm sure all Lambethians are happy that their council tax is spent on this crap. As the consultancy racket is flogging this shit expect it to appear all over the place.

Yeh i noticed that too - I used to work for KPMG and have a good idea of the rate scale, from a junior associate right up to partner. From memory an hour of a partner's time would fetch in the region of £300-400.. that was a coupla years back mind you...

Are they really going to stop enough benefit fraud to justify that kinda outlay? Methinks not.

I thought the people who make a lot of money out of benefit fraud had quite sophisticated set ups multiple ids addresses etc.Rather than someone working and claiming at the same time ,but,I guess if the story scares a few off it might pay for itself.

The fact is that ultimately such an approach will probably scare off more genuine claimants than catch fraudsters imo. Spending money on proper adminstration of the benefits system would reduce error and fraud at a far more efficient and effective level.

Do police in this country use lie detector tests?
No.

So they couldn't use it as evidence against fraudulent claimants then? What's the point?
It's meant as a "screening" process, to try and allow investigative resources to be focused on possibly dodgy claims. Not sure it will even work in that context.
