Lambeth chief executive Derrick Anderson earns more than PM Gordon Brown

:hmm:

Lower taxation does not automatically mean worse public services.
You have bought into the myth that every penny you pay is well and properly spent on much needed public services.
It is the biggest scam ever pulled by our government.
More and more paid - where's the extra social housing?
More and more taken from those too poor to afford it, yet people are still dying from MRSA while we have a shortage of doctors and nurses and a mysterious surplus of managers doing lord knows what in the hospitals.

We are paying more money in council tax than ever before, the council has less to do having shoved their duties off to ALMOs, but we shouldn't ask questions of the Chief Exec "'cos it's public services!" ??

Since New Labour got into power there has been a huge rise in public spending. And this has produced mixed results to say the least. Loads more Doctors,Nurses and Teachers. But also loads more waste.
They inherited a system with huge levels of corruption and poured more money into it.
But it has meant some very real improvements in the quality of life for millions of people.

People should challenge the way public money is spent sure but i dont think anybody should really be calling for the overall budget to be cut.
More needs to be done for disadvantaged people, young people, older people.
But bureacracy needs to be cut.

I'm wary about calling for bureaucracy to be cut as if it's inevitably a good thing. The problem is that some "red tape" is there for a very good reason, just as some is there primarily to make extra work for bureaucrats. It's important to distinguish between the two. Otherwise you end up with some money saved on administration that simply leads to more money being wasted because nobody is able to keep track of it.

:eek::eek::eek:

Clearly I am in the wrong business.
How does one become a council Chief Exec?
Looks like you can do it by keeping your head down and a promotion every 3 to 5 years.

Amazing!

Personally I don't think anyone should be allowed to head a council if all of their senior management experience has been in local government or even in the public sector....too many Chief Execs have no experience of running something where there is no safety net of government bailouts or poor residents to tax.

£219,000 a year..... he's worth no more than a quarter of the price. Not for what we're getting in Lambeth.

Most Chief Execs earn that sort of money while the rest of the workforce gets £15 to £26k a year.

If you think that's bad, you should see how much housing association chief execs get.

Good post nino!

There are some ridiculously high salaries in the public and voluntary sector for bosses. The arguement that you need to pay good salaries to get the best people rarely stacks up. Its really about people riding the gravy train. At least in the private sector (usually) if a boss fails to deliver the business goes bust or they get the boot but some bosses in the public sector seem to be able to get away with anything.
