Ladies, how do you feel about being in a bikini?

I've never worn a bikini. So that answers that! But yes it's annoying if you get invited to something and don't feel like you've been given enough time to groom. Maybe no one will notice but the point is I will.

I've been working in a country where some of the residential compounds have swimming pools, but I don't have one as there isn't one in my apartment block.

And lots of my colleagues go to the beach together, but the idea mortifies me!

So I've been to hotels and beach clubs mostly by myself on days off - we work funny shifts anyway, not a regular Monday-Friday thing, and I prefer to go during the week when it's not so busy because I'm also not keen on crowds. I have been sometimes with a couple of girls from work, one of whom I knew from a previous workplace, so we were already friends, prior to going to the beach. I mostly go to swim in the outdoor pool anyway, not to lounge around. I lounge and read a book for a short while, but then do anywhere between 20-50 lengths.

There have been some pool parties, and some people go in their swimming gear, but I don't, although I did get pushed into a pool fully clothed in a party frock on one occasions, and was highly unamused.

A few weeks ago, there was a drunken night out and half a dozen of us went swimming in the bay in our underwear on the way home from the hotel. But that's because I was the odd one out who didn't really want to go, but kept quiet because I didn't want to be a party pooper. And I figured it was very dark, there weren't many of us, so I just went with the flow instead making a big deal of it and sitting it out.

I don't feel confident or assured whatever, and I do have some wobbly bits, but its not just that, I'm also quite a prudish person (I've never, ever sunbathed topless, for example) and wouldn't feel comfortable wearing a bikini in front of loads of colleagues that I then have to work with. Or even a pool party with friends. It seems weird to be in such a state of undress in front of people I know. I can deal with it better on a beach in front of total strangers who don't know me, iyswim.

I wouldn't ever wear a bikini - there are no words to describe how bloody awful and self-conscious I'd feel. I go for a good supportive one-piece or tankini and a big sarong if I'm moving about.

I find it hard to find bikinis aswell cos loads of shop do them in stupid standard clothes sizes, so every size 12 person has the same size boobs??! wtf?

Alot of them make me look a bit porny because my boobs are quite big.

I started a thread about bikinis, I think it was last year, or maybe the year before, because I was complaining that those dinky little triangles were insufficient to cover my boobs. I thought other women on urban might have some thoughts or tips to share about where to get decent sized bikinis from. And then I was really surprised to see all the guys posting in the thread.

There were some good suggestions though, some of those lingerie websites sell bikinis as well that do decent coverage.

Exactly. But I wouldnt have said im a prudish person at all, but for one, I just didnt want the people who would have been at the party to see me in a bikini. Especially as the chicks there are SUPERHOT. But anyway, I decided to get out the house so I wouldnt be tempted to mull over what I'd be missing at get myself over there so I went out and found some fully-clothed friends to play with.

There was a time when I'd have worn a fairly tight fitting and smallish men's bathing suit. I wouldn't be caught dead in one now, because due to the changes in my body, I wouldn't look good in it anymore.

I also used to wear tight wifebeater type t shirts. Same thing: no way I'd do that now.

I think you wear what you can, when you can do it.

I went to a conference in Las Vegas 8 or 9 years ago, when I worked for Skechers. We all stayed at the Hard Rock hotel. After everyone else left I had one day at the hotel as a day off before I flew home and one of the USA employees said I could have his cabana by the poolside. It was like MTV's The Grind down there - all these Ken and Barbies posing around in scraps of lycra. I felt like a packet of lard. Even though I was a size 12 back then.

If I had to do that now, I think I might have to wear the cabana.

Anywhere you can buy the top and bottom separately and in cup sizes is a good bet - so M&S, Bravissimo or I got a good one from figleaves. I used to be fairly self conscious about bikinis, but actually if you get one that suits your shape, it tends to be more flattering than a two-piece. I wouldn't wear one at all, but then was persuaded into buying one on holiday in france by a friend who just said that if all the French grannies are happy to wear them, or go topless, then I shouldn't feel so self conscious, and she was right.

But I do think there's a big difference between just going swimming, or a family beach where there's all ages, shapes and sizes, and somewhere more body conscious and fashionable - not sure I'd feel great somewhere like that

I guess that's the best attitude to have. I just knew I'd feel well shit about myself when the guy I fancied's perfect gf is there prancing around in her bikini and the whole compare and contrast thing. URGH! The thought still makes me cringe! Yes, the issue is all mine, but yeah I still feel that I made the right choice to stay away.

Then again, i probably just built it up too much in my head. If I'd just got over myself and went, no one would have batted an eyelid at what I looked like. It's just at the moment yesterday I kinda felt pressured to go, my 'bikini bod' was nowhere ready to be displayed to anyone and after he left felt like a total loser for declining so started this thread.

I feel completely comfortable wearing a bikini even though my body has many flaws.

However it does depend on the context, at the women's pond 100% comfortable, at a festie / beach with friends 80 - 90% comfortable, at a foam party at a nightclub full of supermodels and people I don't know, not comfortable at all
