I just bagged this for myself as it's such a good price for a decent back-up drive and thought it may tempt others!

Oh and I'm fucking never buying Toshiba portable drives again. I had two fail on me and their after sales service is non existent.

It is ridiculously cheap. Just over a ton for peace of mind and something that actually looks half decent too. I'm not sure how long it'll be at this price for, but I'll report back when I get it.

I'm a bit wary of lacie stuff as my last lacie drives weren't great.

I'll be interested how you find it.

All the reviews I read have been very positive.

17% of Amazonians gave it a 1 star rating. Probably because they use Seagate drives.
But at least it'll be a pretty paperweight.

I never trust Amazon reviews. Better to listen to trusted tech websites, IMO.

I agree, somewhat. But reviews tend to be of new products, and don't necessarily reflect the views of the people who bought them and found out the drive died in a short time.
No matter how pretty it is, they're still Seagate drives. I would never use one again, even as a last resort. I've had too many bad experiences with them.

That's a bonkers price. My NAS only has 4TB.

I don't know when Seagate became, / were renound for being crap. For a while lots of Digital Audio Workstations had their barracuda drives in. Never had trouble with the ones I used.

Well, maybe that tells it's own story. It's WD in my stuff now.

Their barracuda drives were the worst of the lot, IME. I had 5 of them fail on me in the space of a year.

Only ever had a couple myself TBH. Lasted 12 years. Might still be going, I gave that PC away.

I'm currently speccing a custom desktop and had included a big ol' Barracuda HD...

I think I'll have a look at the other options. It wasn't a 3TB, but it's not worth the risk.

I use the Seagate 5TB Backup Plus. It's £9 more, but doesn't require an external power supply and it's much smaller by the looks of this thing.

    Another option worth considering...

Yeah just to back up the Seagate bashing. I’ve stopped using them after a couple of failures. One was a NAS drive and one was a external backup. Both died just weeks after they went past warranty.

    Not exactly confidence inspiring.

And a 29% and 15% failure rate?

It seems it's a lottery with them. One I'd rather not play a part in.

The one dead Lacie I've had was an enclosure failure - I removed the drive and it still worked. This was a long time ago though.

Huge in terms of storage or physical size? They do a similar model but in 2.5" drive formfactor for about 30 or 40 quid more.

Anyway thanks editor for the tipoff about this drive, I need something for backups and this looks like it will do the job nicely. USB C a bonus.

That's the amount of storage I've got spread over 4 drives in my little microserver.. .!

I've received the drive but have yet to hook it up. It looks quite nice (for an external HD which are rarely lookers).

    Yep, it's a beast alright.

Here's one of my Seagate drives for comparison:

    Screen Shot 2018-05-10 at 18.56.04.png

    That's 11.5 x 7.8 x 2.1 cm.

    The Lacie is 10.6 x 8.4 x 4.9 inches

So it's about 2.5x bigger in width and length, and nearly 4 times bigger in height.

Wtf does it need to be that size for?! :D

Because it holds a mighty 5TB compared to your riddly wee drive. It's a MAN SIZED drive.

    This guy definitely has one:

Fuck me. Complaining that at 10" a 5Tb drive is too big. Bloody millennials.

This was state of the art when I started: a CDC 200Mb disc pack and drive.
