Lab Rats BBC..What happened to our ability to make comedy?

All the good BBC comedy seems to go to BBC3, its strange this was shown on BBC2 maybe they thought it would appeal to the core lab worker demographic.

BBC Three? Good comedy?

An oxymoran surely?

Apart from the first series only of Little Britain and the mildly amusing Gaven & Stacey, what has BBC Three given us?

Series 351 of Two Pints of Lager
Tittybangbang
Little Miss Joyclen
Mighty Boosh (sorry toothache is more amusing)
Touch Me, I'm Karen Taylor

Like fashion, it comes in cycles. The 'fly-on-the-wall' stuff has been done to death now so hopefully we'll get more league of gentleman dark stuff.

In terms of fly-on-the-wall I do like the thick of it and hope they commission more of that. :)
did you see summer heights high? all available on iplayer now, and utterly ace.

I like some of the BBC3 comedies. Mighty Boosh, Snuff Box, Funland, Monkey Dust, Pulling and Anually Retentive.
There's probably more.

Apart from Peep Show, the best British sitcom of recent years is The Thick Of It. In terms of studio sitcom of the format of Lab Rats, has there actually been a really good one since Father Ted?

Notice to anyone who wants to pick and coose their great comedies this evening, Dave has the League Of Gentlemen on and More4 has a double bill of Father Ted followed by Brass Eye. I'm going with TLOG because I've seen Ted sooooo many times and BE is on too late.

I might be a bit obsessed with The Thick Of It actually.

Pleeeeeease make some more!
(Preferably with you know who back in it...)

I liked dinnerladies and Gimme Gimme Gimme alot.

Though maybe alone in this.

green wing, ftw.

I liked Green Wing too (filmed partly in Basingstoke Hospital, place of my birth), but did it have a laughter track? It was also filmed in a more cinematic style which seems to be the way of things these days.

Sitcoms are in better shape than sketch shows though, with I think the League Of Gentlemen being last decent one we had.

I remember when BBC2 had a comedy night on monday it was something to home and watch even if it was 2 pints of larger and Buzzcocks as sometimes something good too. I can't believe there still making 2 pints I thought they were just showing repeats on BBC3.

I think Karen Taylor is better than similar Catherine Tate. Although she doesn't have Tates vocal range.

The 1st two series of Boosh were good the last one was complete shite.

1st series of the IT crowd was good the last series shite maybe because Morris wan't in it or it was too far removed from reality.

Hated the Green Wing and never got Tittybangbang at all.

Black Books was created 7 years ago.

Yes. But has it been made since Father Ted. Which is what stavros asked.

I might also add, having watched all of Snuff Box for the first time proper last night, I'd add that as a fantastic modern British comedy (although not a sitcom as such).

Yay!

I love the feel of it. Might have to watch it again now.

This is a bit of a rip off of an American sitcom called Big Bang, which is only mildly funny sometimes anyway. It is by comparison however, many times better then this pap that the BBC have offered up.

Telegraphed jokes you can see coming a mile away, repetitive jokes that you know have been on the treadmill of sitcom land for years. The 'situation' being a Lab but it seems rather forgetful that this is where it is set most of the time.

One of the most annoying things and the largest difference between the two Sitcoms is that the American one portrays its scientists as brilliant, smart, intelligent, these guys have massive IQs. In the British version, all but one of them is a complete idiot. Where the American comedy deals in the Fantasy, PC Gaming, Geek world for references and jokes, we get slap stick and painful word puns.

This sort of sitcom should have died in the 80s. It is pitiful when confronted with the American competition.

Why oh why has the BBC Comedy department re-hired all the people that retired in 1988, it is the only explanation for why this utter tripe has been made.

Terrible isn't it. Me and Ms S tried to watch all of it the other day, I don't think we cracked a smile. Overdone canned laughter - I could even hear the loop. It's like the piss take show that Gervais comes up with in Extras.
Bad, really bad, the BBC should be ashamed. It makes Dinner Ladies look like Cheers.

Nah it's a funny Scrubs. With less hugging and 'poignant' moments.

(Although I do actually like both)

Chris Addison is a very good stand up...chirst knows what he's doing in this or the crap he's written for it. Hopefully saving the good stuff for a solo tour.

The Mighty Boosh is...off the wall and zany.
In other words, it's poorly written, unfunny wank that relies solely on the sort of retarded "whacky antics" beloved of first year media students everywhere. I've shat things that were funnier than the Mighty Boosh. If it were up to me, the writers would have their hands cut off and their vocal cords removed, lest they ever try to contribute to a TV show again.

Or to other people, it's well written, funny, sweet and original.
The third series wasn't as great, and it is a bit annoying that it's become so studenty. But they can't help who their fans are.
