La Liga 2009/10

So it looks likely that Eto'o will be leaving to Moneybags City...on wages approx £180k a week  We've apparently bid for Keirrison and Villa is still an option (who'd i prefer).

get Villa, please please let Barca get Villa. Eto'o, will demolish the premier league.

I like Sammy, I really do but £180k a week?!?!

Its madness, albeit not as mad as them paying £25 million for him when he would be free at the end of the season. Of course every time they throw such whopping amounts of money away one imagines the Lescott price goes up and up, so perhaps its not entirely a bad thing.

if c.ronaldo is going to be anywhere near 450k in about 3 years then Eto'o is probably worth approaching that.

any idea when the fixtures are out? i've had enough of this country and want to plan some trips.

Probably not for a while...last season they came out in mate July due to TV scheduling issues and you ended up with the joke of all the big teams playing each otehr over the period of about a month.

Well the option is, I think, listen to offers see if he wants to go or he signs a new 4-year deal but which point we'd probably ship him off anyway. I don't really want to see him go but £25m seems about right.

i don't necessarily want to go to see a big team :) zaragoza or espanyol will do me. late july is quite late for those cheap airfares. do we have a possible date for the first weekend?

Well last season began on August 30th/31st weekend, so you'd think it would the 29/30 of August weekend unless it needs to be bought forward a week because of the World Cup.

i'll go for that weekend, unless i'm phenomonally unlucky i should get zaragoza's first match back or Espanyols first game at the new stadium.

So aside from the ridiculous Zlatan stuff i'm bumping this due to the sad news about Bobby Robson passing away :(

An absolute legend and his Barca side was a thing of great beauty, skill and passion. He'll be missed.

I don't mean to be insensitive but does anyone else wonder about this, what with both Puerta and Jarque dying such sudden, heart related deaths?

Well O'donnell in 07 and Foe of course. Could be pure genetics at play and with the training players have to undergo any potential weakness could be a problem. Or are you suggesting systemic drug use?

There's always rumours going about that football is a bit murky when it comes to testing. I was thinking along the lines of some kind of program putting pressure on pre-existing conditions leading to death. Though I suppose the training schedule could do it too.

I think if it was widespread there'd actually be more deaths TBH. These guys are supreme athletes and for some maybe evena slight heart problem that for 99% of the population would never be an issue tips the balance and they suffer a heart attack.

Either way it's a huge loss two years after Puerta :(

Professional football, like every sport where speed, power, endurance or recovery time matters and where there are substantial rewards for success, is absolutely riddled with performance enhancing drugs.

Essentially you'd have to be an absolute idiot or fabulously unlucky to get caught given the state of testing in football or in almost any other sport. The one lesson sporting administrators around the world learned from cycling is that actually catching a swathe of your cheats is extremely bad for business. And professional sport is above all else a business.

If they introduced a cycling style testing regime into football or any other major sport overnight and without giving the teams and players advance warning the result would be absolute carnage. Whole teams which operate systematic doping programmes would be caught as well as countless players. Many still wouldn't be caught as even with a cycling style regime the dopers are still ahead of the testers, but in most sports the dopers are very sloppy by cycling standards because there is no need to be particularly clever about it. The testing programmes are purely there for show and the people running sport have a collossal vested interest in not seeing their sport become the new cycling in the public mind.
