La Liga 2008/09

Latest scores here, for anybody interested: probably easier than watching on La Sexta here, given that

(a) they're using a split-screen format, rendering the pictures half their normal size
(b) my reception isn't the best at the best of times
(c) half the pitch is in bright sunshine and half in shadow, which always makes things impossible.

Anyway they're switching between Pamplona and Gijon and when the latter's the main picture I can see hardly anything at all.

However: at half-time it's Sporting who face the drop, having gone a goal down to Recreativo and so far failed to get it back (a very good handball shout just before half-time, insofar as I could see it). Osasuna went a goal down early in but got it back, remarkably through a bad error from Casillas, and Sporting went one down shortly afterwards. Then Getafe went a goal down at Santander - it may make a difference, as per my posting above, if they lose by two rather than one - but equalised shortly afterwards. The Betis conceded a goal to Valladolid just before the break.

Personally I suspect Sporting will get back in it against Recreativo - they've already missed several chances - so it may be up to Osasuna to get another against Real Madrid, which they'd have done already if not for a superb header off the line from Marcelo.

You're getting pictures from Sevilla? We only got the Sporting and Osasuna games which did detract from the drama a little in the last few minutes when it was obvious both of them would win.

Dicky refereeing in Pamplona - I don't think they'd have won without it - although people who remember what happened to Osasuna in Madrid earlier in the season may think of it as karma.

(Incidentally, I forgot to mention that Marca's headline yesterday had Torres saying that if Benitez went to Real, "I wouldn't follow him". This may be the only instance in the paper's history of their saying somebody didn't want to sign for Real.)

Anyway, I'm glad Osasuna stayed up and I can't say I'll miss Betis all that much.

They had a "watch the goals as they go in" thing during the Osasuna game, the last bit of which was closeups of various fruity blondes / brunettes in Betis tops and tears.

Well I didn't see that coming at all...although like Donna, Betis aren't much of a loss really aside from the fact you lose the Seville derbi

My La Liga team of the season (feel free to disagree) - Went 4-3-3 which meant dropping Xavi  and tried to avoid going too Barca heavy!

Casillas (Real Madrid) - yes Madrid leaked goals but they'd have leaked far more were it not for this guy who at times seemd super human

Alves (Barca) - dives far too much, plays acts like a clown but as an attacking option he's made a huge difference
Albiol (Valencia) - the guy who gets better with every season which means he may not be at Valencia next season
Filipe (Depor) - err...didn't want to pick another Barca player and for the 3/4 of La Liga this guy was outstanding
Adriano (Sevilla) - Only just shaded by Freddy as Sevilla's player of the season.

Senna (Villarreal) - a rock, although showing some signs of a few cracks. Tough choice between him and Toure as the holding player
Emana (Real Betis) - 11 goals, hard tackler and the only highlight of Betis's season. He'll be in La Liga next season, unlike his current club
Iniesta (Barca) - no reason needed, it's Andres Iniesta

Messi (Barca) - 23 goals...errr...hair getting much better now he's stopped wanting to be Batigol
Forlan (Atleti) - 2009 Pichichi and a class act all round. Bad hair (still)
Negredo (Almeria) - Okay Villa scored more, so did Kanoute. But neither plays for Almeria!!! Scored 19, as many as Thierry Henry

Subs
Diego Lopez (Villarreal)
Puyol (Barca)
Pique (Barca)
Higuain (Real Madrid)
Xavi (Barca)
Juan Mata (Valencia)
Robben (Real Madrid)
Eto'o (Barca)
Aguero (Atleti)
Kanoute (Sevilla)
Villa (Valencia)

I think I pretty much agree with that, not sure i would put casillas in this season but obviously he's had a shocking defence to play with so yeah,I dunno, lol.

Yeah I was thinking Lopez instead but Casillas when i've seen him has been superb it's the shower of shit in front of him that's the problem. He's a class act too, doesn't often moan, esp when he has every right.

Only other viable options would be Palop (been beaten near post a few times too often) or Valdes who is too gaff prone.

Agreed pretty much with your team of the season, g force except :D

1. Messi's hair were never meant to simulate Batistuta, but Kun Aguero.

2. You MUST make room for Xavi, no matter what.

3. No coach of the season?

As for Barca's own player of the season, my pick: Iniesta first, Messi and Xavi second, Eto'o third, sort of an enduring medal for him.

I said at the beginning of this thread that, based on the color of the away shirt (it's absolutely ghastly), we will probably win everything. Now, after seeing the next season's away shirt (which is even worst :D) , I'm hopeful. Happy summer, everyone!

You could put Xavi in of course but the team wouldn't work as a team in as set formation because you have to have 3 up front IMO to accomodate Messi.

Barca players of the year:

Iniesta
Messi
Xavi
Alves

Coach of the season goes without saying really, first treble in Spanish football.
