La Liga 2008/09

Only a week to go!!! Real beat Valencia 4-2 in the cup match, even with nine men!!

Pains me to say it but I think with the team they have and the addition of Van der Vaart they have to be favourites to win it again. We've looked good pre-season, very sharp and even the new defence seems to be working.

As for the league...clearly Barca and Real will be up there but I expect Atleti to push more and Villarreal to maintain a Top 4 finish. As for the rest...it will be tight for UEFA spots with at least 5 teams capable of qualifying.

Well we qualified for CL
Pretty o.k. CL draw. Group C: Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Basel, Shaktar
Bojan celebrated his 18th birthday
Messi is back and ready
and we begin the season away at Numancia this Sunday.

mrkikiet mentioned a certain soothsayer last season, do we think Baca should go to a fortune teller before the first match?

Best of luck!

this season i have 50% interest in la liga. tragic.

Espanyol are moving to a new out of town stadium which is going to deprive them of half their, already minimal support and zaragoza are languishing in segunda with a squad that could challenge for europe, and the second highest paid manager in Spain, crazy.

Yeah it's a real shame Espanyol moved...that old stadium had a proper old style atmosphere and a lovely walk to it. Could struggle without Reira....Tamudo and De La Pena have got to up their games from last season.

Still think Real are the strongest team...we have a very good starting XI but after that we've got some very average players. Still need a decent keeper to challenge Valdes.

riera is going to be a big loss, de la pena doesn't get any younger. it will depend how focussed luis luis stays.

i think real madrid will probably win the league again, no-one else has sufficient squad depth to challenge them. Unless Atleti can keep their first team squad all fit and playing together.

Racing santander are going to struggle.

Valencia kick off La Liga 08/09 season with a very good win over Mallorca after the David show - Villa and Silva both had great games and Mallorca had no answer.

Espanyol beat Vallodolid thanks to Luis Garcia's early in the second half after good work by De La Pena.

That was painful...at times we over ran them and just couldn't score. Still, it's only one game and Real also lost to Depor!

Painful it was.

Forgot to update this :o

Still a topsy turvy start and with the exception of Atleti I haven't seen teams playing to their potential. But that said this week didn't see that many shocks.

Barca started to click, beating Gijon 6-1 and while we looked good for the first time this season the opposition weren't the best!

Overall there's four teams sharing top spot - Valencia, Almería and Villarreal joining Espanyol on seven points after all won their respective matches. Real Madrid are a point behind after beating Santander 2-0 but lost Guti to injury.

Mallorca are still in the bottom three after a 0-0 draw with Depor.

1 Valencia 7 +4

barcelona sporting was a farce. who is that sergio busquets? is he from the cantera?

zaragoza won their first match of the season. good news.

I'm still trying to figure out what Pep is doing although with very weak teams the plan seemed to work :D Now this week will be the real test for Barca as we meet Betis at home (Wed the 24th at 20:00 CET) and against Espanyol on Saturday the 27th (at 22:00 CET).

Still trying to figure out his best side I think...and where to play them. Right now though it's not looking like any great change from Rijkaard.

Match day 5. Interesting. And ugly.

Didn't watch the Espanyol-Barca game but I read all the reports and saw all the pcitures :( Tell me your views.

Idiots on both sides causing trouble. Barca fans taunting Espanyol fans...who retaliated by throwing flares into the 'away' support section. Then it all got very silly indeed.

I thought Barca played much better, seemed to have a decent shape at least but right now Valencia look good. Going to be an interesting season.

I agree la liga certainly has been interesting so far. Some of the last few spanish games ive watched this season have ended 4-3/4-3/4-2 etc. Very entertaining. Wonder why there's been so many goals lately. That's not even mentioning the 7-1 in midweek, though i missed that.

The 7-1 though was Sporting Gijon who were always destined to be our Swindon Town-esque whipping boys.

the total lack of security at montjuic was pretty interesting. apparently the mossos didn't want to get involved becasue they feared it would inflame the situation.

Seems also now that the Barca fans up top began throwing flares below but that somehow police let Espanyol fans into the same section which started all the troubles.

Respect to Puyol and Pep who aparently bollocked Alves, Marquez and Pique for running up to where the Boixes were when Messi scored further flaming a bad situation. We don't need that shit....what is it, 16 years ago when that 12 year old was killed at La Serra by the Barca boneheads?

Also a word on the ref Cantalejo who is an abomination is a league of shit referees. The only 'legal' goal of the entire match was Henry's, which was gifted by Kameni's mistake...you can see why he might have given a penalty from where he stood but the way he did it was awful.

Well there's not much to say except :D at Barca's demolition of Atleti. We were sublime in the first half, hopefully a sign that the side is finally clicking under Pep, although Maxi's goal again, a great a finish as it was, showed a tendency to fall asleep defensively. Attacking though the passing and movement was great and Iniesta once again proved his class.

Villarreal looked a tad shaky but pulled out the result against Betis who must be gutted because they need the points badly. Valencia keep up the good start with a 1-0 win over Valladolid, as do Sevilla beating Bilbao convincingly. The Real - Espanyol game was a cracker and ended 2-2 but could have been more goals to either side. And Gijon finally got three points at last :)

Table after Week 6

Valencia 16 +9
Villarreal 16 +6
Sevilla 14 +8
Barcelona 13 +11
Real Madrid 13 +9
Almeria 11 +2
Atletico Madrid 9 +2

Mallorca 8 -2
Malaga 7 -2
Valladolid 6 -2
Racing Santander 5 -4
Athletic Bilbao 5 -5
Osasuna 4 -2
Numancia 4 -4
Recreativo Huelva 4 -9
Sporting Gijon 3 -12
Real Betis 2 -4

What's the deal with the Police in Athletico Madrid's stadium then? Saw this video from before the CL game with Madrid last week and was surprised it didn't make much of a splash in the media. Potential for a riot if they treat the Liverpool fans the same way in 2 weeks. That might make the news actually. I heard a few Bolton fans had trouble there last season too.

Marseille fans getting battered by Madrid Police

I've been to the 3 main stadiums in Madrid and never saw any trouble. Is this sort of reception reserved for non-Spanish teams' supporters?

Well it's the usual disconnect between UEFA and FIFA and what bans are appropriate. Shame for LFC fans I'll admit but the message it sends out is more important. If it's 200 miles there's not a huge range of possibilities, certainly not in terms of capacity for Atleti and LFC fans:

Getafe (Madrid outskirts..so maybe too close): Capacity 17,000
Real Zaragoza - La Romerda, cap 35,000
Valencia - Mestella cap 55,000 - but also in the CL league so tricky.
Valladolid - Jose Zorilla, cap 26,500.

Real Zaragoza - La Romerda, cap 35,000
There isn't a great deal of love lost between Atleti and Zaragoza so I'm not sure that's even a possibility - plus that fact that the Romareda must be a long way from the required standards for champions league football.
