La Liga 2007/08

The game on La Sexta turns out to be Sevilla v Getafe rather than Murcia v Zaragoza as I may have previously claimed.

Never mind, a cracker so far with Getafe scroing very early on though they've come under pressure since Sousa got his marching orders.

That wanker on La Sexta has to go, mind. The one who makes Jonathan Pearce sound like Richard Dimbleby.

Actually I've mistaken the game on La Sexta before - is there something confusing about the listings on marca.com?

Meanwhile Getafe are down to nine and it's not even the second half yet: a second sending-off, for attempted amputation. Sevilla for their part have had a player hospitalised in an unconnected incident. It's one-way traffic - towards the dressing-room.

4-1 to Sevilla as the numerical advantage told. I am fairly sure that La Sexta commentary is not something I'd start enjoying as I become familar with it.

I hope my frivolous tone last night wasn't too inappropriate as actually it appears that the Sevilla player taken off is in a bad way in hospital - if I understand the Marca report his life may be in danger (although this English-language report is more reassuring).

According to the Spanish papers Puerta is still in critical condition and might have suffered brain damage :(

I've just seen this news on Marca, what an absolutely horrible thing to happen.
I really hope that he makes a full recovery.

You can see some footage on the Sports section of the online El Pais. (It's not voyeuristic or exploitative.) You can see why I didn't realise anything was wrong - though obviously he looked in trouble when they were reaching for his mouth, he then walks off apparently nothing worse than dazed.

Strange, isn't it? I mean presumably he files his copy some time on Sunday afternoon and he must at least have cast his eye over Marca online. How weird.

I missed it too. Jesus what a horrible incident though...he's obviously in trouble, apparently swallows his tongue having a fit then recovers to walk off at half time only to collapse in the dressing room :(

Statement from the hospital said:

"The arrest has been caused by repeated incidents of serious ventricular arrhythmia. These are being controlled with treatment.

The patient's situation, 36 hours after being brought in, continues to be critical as a result of the serious consequences of the cardiac arrest, including some effects on the brain."

I see Ronny's dual citizenship is now confirmed meaning he's worth even more when we sell him to Chelsea ;) Rijkaard bottled it again at the weekend...Messi substitute was perhaps right if he was injured, but Eto'o or Ronny should have gone and bouight on Giovanni or Bojan.

And best dive went to Villa...at least the ref caught it this time.

Fuck. Oh man...I hope they postpone the next round of league matches out of respect. He'd just broken into the national team and was becoming a key player at Sevilla and nationally.

RIP Antonio :(

:( Fucking hell. R.I.P Antonio Puerta

Thats the second time in the last few days that I've felt this sick, what with Ray Jones at the weekend as well. :(

The guy was a bit of a hero in these parts.
understandably so, he just seemed like a really good honest footballer who was slowly beginning to make it and was really pleased to be playing for Sevilla.

Sad, sad day.

What's the use of the beautiful game in light of a loss of life? They Should cancel all Liga matches this weekend.

RIP Antonio Puerta :(

One week after Antonio's gone.

g force and those who watched the games, please give us a run down?

Valencia were bloody awful...just terrible. Not a chance of challenging at this rate. A shadow of the team last season.

Real looked good, although helped by Villarreal's inability to defend, pass, spot a team mate in space. Sneijder looked in a good form. Villarreal I thought would be Top 5 but I may revise that unless they change it around very quickly.

Barca were all over Bilbao...first half posession was something stupid like 75-25 to us. Henry hit the post and looked fairly lively. Valdes messed up again to gift them a goal....and Toure scored the third that never was! Marquez then got himself sent off for no good reason.

Bilbao look like relegation fodder.

But TBH the entire weekend was overshadowed and I didn't enjoy any of the games.

i disagree, i though villareal looked pretty good in the first half and the save casillas made just at the start of the second was key. Villareal's defence was porous and they really needed someone to properly finish rather than try and play it into the net.

Oliveira rescued Zaragoza, not looking to clever for Victor's men at the moment.

Luis Garcia had Espanyol 2-0 up away in Betis and then they pulled it back.

I hope tonights game is a fitting tribute.
