La Liga 2006/07

mallorca are a bunch of thugs. particularly 22 who looks like a bigger oleg luzhny.

Espanyol are still going to struggle.

la sexta should be called real madrid tv. few highlights of most game snad the whole capello press conference.

The Sevilla TV farce is wearing thin now...plus matches being moved at the last minute.

Seems Barca will report Santader to the Spanish FA for racist chants towards Eto'o

I'm praying Mallorca, Santader and Zaragoza go down, but get a feeling it might be curtains for a basque team unless they starts getting points.

Next week could be very interesting - Betis v Madrid, Atleti v Sevilla, Barca v Valencia :)

still no sevilla on tv this weekend.

zaragoza without sergio and d.millito for the trip to the so far winless villareal.
barcelona valencia should be a thriller tomorrow evening, let's hope for another valdes pass to villa.
betis madrid coming up later and beckham benched again, anyone who genuinely thinks he is going to be offered a new contract needs their head examining. cicinho replaced by bravo, unlucky, and last year he was meant to be replacing beckham, how thigns change.
espanyol go to mallorca for a clash of the two real football playing sides in the division. espnaoyl to win by the odd rufete goal in 7, maxi lopez to actually get a shot on target.

Great weekend matches this week.

Saturday saw Real beat Betis 1-0 thanks to Diarra's first goal and although it was very competent display neither side played particularly well.

Sevilla lost their unbeaten record, going don 2-1 at the Calderon to an impressive Atleti side thanks to a late double from Maxi Rodriguez.
Brazil midfielder Renato gave Sevilla a deserved lead five minutes before the break when he drilled low into the corner. The game was turned on its head when Sevilla had Julien Escude and then fellow centre-back Javi Navarro sent off in the second half.

The Catalan match saw an excellent 1-1 draw between Valencia and Barca at the Nou Camp. Villa gave the visitors the lead, but int he second half Barca came out fighting with Iniesta scoring after some lovely work by Eto'o and Ronny.

Last season's surprise package Osasuna got back to winning ways with 2-0 win over Celta thanks to goals from former Real players Valdo and Juanfran.

Getafe and Bilbao had an interesting 0-0. Bilbao had Aduriz sent off just before half time. Getafe then lost fullback Cosmin Contra to a straight red before Bilbao's Murillo was dismissed in injury time.

Racing came bck twice to draw 2-2 with Nastic - their final goal comign 4 minutes into injury time. Nastic, led by former Real protege Portillo look very handy this season and could surprise a few people. Levante beat Depor 2-0 thanks to 2 goals from Kapo. Mallorca beat Espanyol thanks to a goal from former Barca player Maxi Lopez.

New signing Florent Sinama-Pongolle snatched an injury-time winner for Huelva in an entertaining match at Anoeta to beat Sociedad 3-2. Villarreal finally remembered how to score goals and beat Zaragoza 3-2.

Table after Week 4:

Barcelona 10 +7
Real Madrid 10 +6
Valencia 10 +4
Atletico Madrid 9 +4
Sevilla 9 +6
Deportivo La Coruna 7 +1
Recreativo Huelva 7 +1
Getafe 7 +1
Real Zaragoza 6 +3
Osasuna 6 -1
Levante 6 -4
Mallorca 5 -1

and this weekend we saw the goals but no other incidents int he Sevilla match, some of which were probably pretty key.

You fail to mention the appearance of Saviola for Barcelona. He should really have scored the winner but directed it weakly at Canizares. David Villa went off injured as well. For me the main thing from this game was Joaguin looking interested in playing football again after 18 months of going through the motions at betis.

Real Zaragoza should have been at least two up by half-time against Villareal, Aimar missed a really easy chance just before half-time. Both keepers were rubbish, particularly sanchez for zaragoza. Just shoot on sight against either side and there are goals in it.

The crowd reaction to Saviola was interesting - people on their feet applauding him. True, he could have won it! I didn't think Villa's injury was that bad

Joaquin looked in good form and a few pounds lighter, and Spain need him in good form.

Right...interesting matches again and other news. Eto'o seems like he'll be out until January, so Eidur and Javier have got to produce the goods. And they managed it on the weekend.

Barcelona continued the unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao. Yeste gave the home side the lead, but with Casas red card, Barc soon took charge. Gudjohnsen gave Barça a 2-1 lead in the 61st minute then the rabbit who hadn't scored a league goal for Barca in two years made it three. Bilbao's poor start continues and really they look destined to struggle unless they can get the midfield working and shore up the defence.

Real drew 1-1 with Atleti in the Madird derbi - Mista put the red side of the city ahead at the Bernabéu but Raúl pulled Real level after 37 minutes. Real held on after Ramos was sent off early in the second half.

Valencia continue to impress, beating Nastic 4-0 thanks to goals from Morientes, two from Villa - who must be favourite for the Pichichi with Eto'o out - and a final goal from Angulo. Sevilla beat Getafe 1-0 thanks to a goal from Fabiano.

Elsewhere, Recre beat Betis 2-0 at home, Depor beat Sociedad 2-0 and Villarreal beat Mallorca 2-1.

I think so - there's some rules about which players can play in the "B" team - generally Div 2 or 3 regional. They're essentially separate entities, usually the B team is youth players, but obviously teams also field regulars coming back from injury.

this wasn't a red card. it handed the game to fcbarcelona.
espanyol were apparently woeful, for a change.
valencia could have scored 5 or 6.
zaragoza were two down at half time but then pulled back in the second half, despite the referee missing various penalty appeals. Jekyll and Hyde.

Can you see any chance for Espanyol this season? I think they might get lucky as Sociedad also look very poor, Santander aren't as good as you either.

No Primera Liga this weekend as the national team were in Estocolmo getting a good estuffing. As were Barbastro in the Segunda B (III) derbi at Huesca where I was present to see the home team deliver a 4-0 caning to the Opus Dei lads.

Odd thing about going to a game in Spain - no chanting. No singing. All right we're talking about Huesca rather than Barcelona, but very odd all the same.

very little singing/chanting at FCBarcelona either. more at Espanyol.
will read phil ball article but before reading it will say that if catalunya and euskadi want their own national sides they need their own national leagues and the consequences for European qualification etc from that. (may come back and edit this.)

He did live in Madrid and then I think Valencia for a year.

Would they need their own leagues? Swansea and Cardiff play in the English divisions, but Wales has it's own national team.

The problem is the highly politicised nature of the independence campaigns - the Madrid government could be seen to be bowing to ETA's work. And the right are still very powerful in spainish politics they'd hate it.

Does the Constitution explicitly forbid a referendum on Basque or Catalan independence?

We have an Aragonese independence movement here: there's two pro-independence parties with elected representatives. No idea about their politics at all.

long time lurker, first time poster here.

I'm pretty sure Phil Ball lives in San Sebastian. I wrote to him a couple of years ago in response to an article of his on Athletic's inclusion of South Americans of Basque descent in their signing policy, and I might have suggested that a follower of Real Sociedad is unlikely to have a balanced view of Athletic's policies.

He wrote me a very patient reply explaining why I was very wrong.

Yeah, I thought he might live there too.

I don't live so very far from the Basque country - even closer if the Basque Country includes Navarra, ho ho.

Who's his publisher? Maybe I'll write via them.

Heh, well I'm not on speaking terms with WSC. But I'm sure it wasn't them who published Morbo, or was it?

(I suppose, being a bookseller and librarian, I ought to be capable of lookiung that one up...)

Another week and more interesting results.

Biggest match was the crunch tie between Barca and Sevilla, who beat us comprehensively in the pre-season cup. Escude was unlucky to have his goal ruled out for a push on Motta - there was a push but it was hardly significant.

Escude then conceded a penalty less than two minutes later when he brought down Belletti. Ronny scored. Kanoute then levelled things from Alves' cross. A minut elater it was 2-1, Ronny scoring a lovely free kick. Messi ensured all three points with a great goal, reciving the ball from Xavi, jinking past two defenders and fired low past Palop 10 minutes from time.

Valencia slipped to their first defeat of the season losing 3-2 at Celta, while Atleti snatched a 2-1 victory thanks to Aguero "new Maradonna part 542" bundled the ball into the net with his hand....maybe he really is the new Maradonna :D

Neighbours Real lost their unbeaten when they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Getafe on Saturday. Real looked out of sorts and it's clear a few players are still adjusting to Capello's style.

Down at the bottom Bilbao and Santander got their first victories of the season. Bilbao edged a 3-2 win at Nastic, while Racing clinched a 1-0 victory at Osasuna.

But it goes from bad to worse for Sociedad - went 1-0 at Zaragoza, onyl to lose 3-1 and be the onyl team yet to win this season. It's looking bleak for the basques.

Mallorca beat Levante 1-0, Betis and Depor drew 1-1. Villarreal struggle to match up to expectations, drawing at home to Espanyol, a result that did neither team any favours.

Table after Week 6

Barcelona 16 +11
Valencia 13 +7
Atletico Madrid 13 +5
Sevilla 12 +4
Real Madrid 11 +5
Deportivo La Coruna 11 +3
Real Zaragoza 10 +5
Recreativo Huelva 10 +2
Getafe 10 +1
Villarreal 8 -1
Mallorca 8 -1
Celta Vigo 7 -2
Osasuna 7 -2
Levante 7 -5
Racing Santander 5 -4
Espanyol 5 -4
Athletic Bilbao 5 -7
Real Betis 4 -2
Gimnastic 4 -7
Real Sociedad 1 -9

espanyol nearly won it, had a pandiani goal disallowed for virtually nothing.
the atletico goals, particularly the handball were pretty special.
sociedad zaragoza was notable for the poor refereeing, particularly in the first half, two penalties that weren't and a harsh sending off for two yellows.
Bilbao were 3-0 up and nastic got to 2-3 at which point they seemed to stop attacking. strange.

Think Espanyol can turn it around? Rumours of Lotina for Spain if, sorry, when Luis gets sacked :D
