La Liga 2005/06

Given Beckham's record, a cynic might be forgiven for wondering if he had a reason for wanting to dodge the game at Depor on Wednesday.

I realise this may sound a bit far-fetched, but doesn't Ducher still play for Depor, and wasn't he the one who broke Becks' foot, coincidentally in the season leading up to the last World Cup?
that sounds very very far-fetched. Beckham was petulant and frustrated and got sent off. idiot.

True, but you could say the same about when he got sent off against Wales. At least this time - if he did intend to get sent off - he did it without deliberately committing a foul on anyone, like he did on Ben Thatcher. Of course, what he's never going to do after that incident is ever admit it again, so we'll never know!

Er, he didn't get sent off

He merely got a yellow card to ensure his ban would be now, instead of later.

:o
For the Wales one, I stand corrected, you're right - he got carded in order to miss the next game. The one on Sunday was of course a sending off which he'd need to miss the next game, for whatever reason - or none at all!

How the fuck have Madrid got the audacity to appeal Beckham's second yellow on the weekend? He got booked, indulged in more dissent and received a second yellow. End of story. Case closed.

Gravesen's staright red on the other hand was extremely harsh and warranted nothing more than a yellow. That's worth an appeal.

Probably because they didn't win the legaue last yeasr which means everything is a conspiracy to prevent them winning this year...

Seriously though, by all means challenge the ref on the straight red for Gravesen (not the last man but certainly he adimtted a cynical tackle to prevent them breaking forward) but this from Pablo Garcia is just too funny:

http://football.guardian.co.uk/continentalfootball/story/0,15758,1599891,00.html

David Beckham's Real Madrid team-mate Pablo García yesterday claimed that the Englishman's third sending off in Spain owes more to his good looks than his bad behaviour, after the England captain's red card during Sunday's 2-1 home defeat to Valencia.

"I can't understand what the problem was," García insisted. "I doubt he said anything because Beckham doesn't speak Spanish that well - I can barely understand him on the pitch. I don't know why Beckham got sent off. Maybe it's because he's blonde and pretty - the referee is capable of sending him off for that."

Yeah that's right he was given a second yellow for his looks  :D

So maybe the ref was just evening things up by carding Becks for his looks after he'd dismissed Gravesen for being bald and ugly :D

This has summed up the Spanish FA really. They have a racist for national coach and an unpleasantly racist element of support for the national team. Now they have bent over and taken it up the arse from Real Madrid.

I wonder what Sepp Blatter makes of it? Will FIFA have the balls to over-rule it? Rooney's double yellow in the Champions League was not challenged as it was obviously the correct decision. Beckham's double yellow was practically identical - whilst the 'applause' for his first yellow was not right in the referee's face it was, nonetheless, sarcastic and therefore a form of dissent and worthy of a second booking.

It's this sort of corruption that puts me off football these days.

what match is on sky tonight? deportivo - real madrid or barcelona v malaga (fresh from a 5-0 victory)
alaves are attempting to get messi and his 'spanish' passport in trouble.,

both one after the other

Yeah nice Beckham gets his card taken away but Messi's stays for diving even though the video shows he was fould and the guy admitted fouling him

Still, Real lost 3-2 to Deportivo who have now gone 14 years unbeated to Real at the Riazor. Thankfully we beat Malaga 2-0 thanks to an iffy penalty and a beautifuil goal from Larsson...really nice pass from Ronny and Henrik held off a defender before chipping the keeper.

Osasuna are back on top after leaving it very late - 92nd minute - against Bilbao to win 3-2. They're on top because Celta lost to Real Mallorca!Getafe are playinmg tonight, so may go back to the top.

I don't get the Messi thing...he's Argentinean but has lived in Spain since he was 13 - when he joined Barca. You can get a "half" passport where he keeps his Argentinean passport and can play for Argentina (he's the U-21 captain), but he's also classed as a spanish citizen and hence can play more games for us becuase he no longer copunts as one of the three non-EU players. It's a dodgy way of doing things, but still legal.

Problem is if Alaves win the case they get awarded the match 5-0 I think and then every other team he's played against can appeal their results and if they win we'd be stripped of the league title

It also stems from the fact that we're meant to play 2 games behind closed doors for the Figo "pig head" incident, but haven't yet for some reason! Probably involves suitcases of Euros knowing the Spanish FA.

made up to see the king of kings back..... the man is like no other G

Iffy penalty? G force, it was a dive and you know it :p

Yer Malaga man gets his toe to the ball and makes no contact with Ronny whatsoever, but he still went down like a ton of bricks :(

Got to admit, that was old school Larsson, lovely bit of strength and the chip was sublime. Almost made up for Piresdinho ;)

Well you do realise the Spanish FA is against us winning again...even the so we need the breaks :D It's the onyl explanation for Beckham's card being taken back.

Yeah I was being generous when I said it was iffy...but i'm sure later this season someone will get one against us.

Gotta say I thought it was a pen until I saw the replay, so I wouldn't blame the ref too much. Dodgy or not, Ronny sure stuck it away well.

Sublime goal from Larsson, nice to see him back.

second dodgy penalty of the season at the nou camp for barcelona.

first was against zaragoza and meant they got a draw, second managed to turn 1 point into 3. cheating catalans (not including valencia in that region...).

anyway the real deal is tonight, alaves - espanyol. tamudo to rediscover his scoring from as the periquitos start their climb up the table.

So Getafe lose...3-0 to Sociedad, Atleti beat Cadiz bythe same scoreline and Espanyol managed a 1-1 draw against a very average Alaves side.

Valencia also lost to Sevilla, 2-0 - this season looks like it's going to wide open!

Another week and La Liga starts to look a little more familiar...

Despite a few stumbles Real seem to be hitting form and finding a formation that works for them - dare I say it - losing Figo has made the team better, esp when they bought in two defenders and a midfield player. They beat Betis 2-0 and the Seville team are looking pretty ropey at the moment, shipping goals and not looking like the attacking force they showed in flashes last season. Their city neighbours fared better with a 1-1 draw at Mallorca.

Speaking of last season, Villarreal still haven't hit their stride and drew 1-1 with Atleti, who have continued their fine tradition of looking world beating one week and relegation fodder the next!

Getafe lost to Deportivo thanks to a goal from Tristan and promptely went to 4th in a very tight table. Espanyol's shaky start continued with a 2-0 loss at surprise package Osasuna...perhaps not a great surprise, but you must be getting worried Mrkikiet with such a bad goal difference.

Barca shook off recent stumbles to beat a very lacklustre Sociedad team 5-0 - with 2 from Ronny and anotehr for Larsson

Real Zaragoza and Malaga drew 1-1. Valencia also drew 1-1 against a spirited Santander side. Biblao and Celta Vigo also managed the weekend's result of choice with yeat another 1-1 draw. Oh Alaves and Cadiz drew 0-0.

So after 10 games here's the table (for the first time  ):

Osasuna 21 points
Barcelona 19
Real Madrid 18
Getafe 17
Celta Vigo 17
Villarreal 16
Sevilla 16
Deportivo La Coruna 16
Valencia 16
Real Sociedad 16
Atletico Madrid 14
Cadiz 13
Malaga 11
Real Zaragoza 10
Racing Santander 10
Mallorca 9
Real Betis 9
CD Alaves 8
Espanyol 8
Athletic Bilbao 6

confidence problems for kameni now. things aren't looking good and lotina appears to be trying to pretend that there is nothing wrong.
not too clever.
i didn't think real sociedad played that badly, didn't look like a 5-0.

Standards must really be slipping...10 games in and finally a manager is sacked.

Jose Luis Mendilibar is out at Bilbao replaced by former Bilbao player and ex-national coach Javier Clemente who led them to back-to-back league titles in 83 and 84. Although his third spell ended in disaster, he's a bit of an escape artist of late and Bilbao have a decent enough team to get out of the bottom three.

TBH - i'm not so sure that's a good thing for Espanyol...there's a lack of someone decent to take over and he led you to 5th last season. Maybe he's lost the player's confidence, because De La Pena,Tamudo and Kameni are all well below par at the moment.

Another week and Osasuna still lead the way after being the first team to beat Sociedad at Anoeta this season.

Barca stay second after beating Getafe 3-1...we scored very early, which kinda shcoked the Madrid team and from then on it was a case of consolidating the lead, which we did to make it 18 goals in just 5 games. Ronny and Guilty both looked sharp and Eto'o was his usual self.

Shoudl mention that Getafe's goal is an early candidate for goal of the season when Pernia hit a sweet-as-you-like volley into the top corner from outside the box

An injury-hit Madrid stay third a point behind after winning 1-0 againt Zaragoza, mainly thanks to Casillas's wonderful point-blank save from Milito. Woodgate went off injured though - good news for England is that Beckham was once again Real's best player, producing some beautiful crosses that Raul manage to blaze over

On Saturday Mallorca beat Cadiz 2-1 away and Celta beat Alaves to remain 4th just behind Madrid. Malaga and Deportivo drew 1-1, as did Santander and Betis.Their Seville neighbours ground out a 0-0 with Atleti in a remarkably boring game.

Espanyol also drew 1-1 with Bilbao, coming from behind at the break to earn a much-needed point. Villarreal beat Valencia thanks to a Fugueora goal, and may have turned a corner after so far failing to re-create last season's form. The loss of Forlan for a few weeks hasn't helped their cause either.

the referee gave real madrid a pretty hefty helping hand as well. you missed the first dubious penalty? have a second slightly more obvious one. real zaragoza are not having much luck on their travels.

Espanyol were woeful, and bilbao were worse. 15 minutes to go attacking corner and bilbao put 2 attackers in the opposition penalty area. the general loss of confidence at espanyol has adversely affected Kameni.
