Kiss takes the British to Rock School

Having played rugby against Christs Hospital several times when I was at school I can certainly agree with TeeJay that they were anything but posh upper class twats. We always knew we were in for a kicking whenever we played them. :)

Like wise we used to play Christ's at sport & they were not your average public school pupils. In the 1980's there were some right rough types on sports scholorships from the estates of south London. Very good school though & I always liked the uniform. Used to see them on the platform at Clapham Junction.

But thats not what pk is saying

The kids picked are unrepresentative of British children and it seems of CH children as well . IMO they all seem to be utter twats , especially that girl who says rock music is just "noise" the closed minded bitch

Exactly, thank-you Henry.

Some people predictably determined to turn this into a class thing...

I'm just here taking the piss out of the uniform, and the kids on the programme...

We love it. It confirms everything we ever thought about the English.

I saw the first 10minutes and thought it was seriously shit. The man was amazingly stupid and egocentric, the kids looked embarassed and had obviously been selected for their "push the obvious prejudice buttons" value.

'U's all round then.

Pity, cos Rock School is one of my lads' favourites and not a bad film.

This program finished airing in Australia a couple of months ago. Yes, I got a giggle out of the children they picked and their absolute lack of contemporariness....(if that's a word) and was quite amazed at their school uniform...but really...I doubt anyone thought it was in any way typical of the UK. I think most people understand it was THAT group of children, and not the way it is across the board. It's just a TV program after-all.

r'n'b

the black kid was on richard and judy, he made a point of saying that the program edited out the bits where he said he liked r'n'b and hip-hop... and it wasn't a posh school.

Tbh, the classical music bunch in my state comprehensive were no different. They seem to be fairly representative of kids who want to study classical music.

The "British" kids in the show are hardly representative of British schoolkids, and it pisses me off that people across the Atlantic are going to reinforce their stereotypes of Brits being rich opera-loving posh twats with little discernable social skills.

Hell, I prefer that to the truth of the matter - that British schoolkids are more likely to be little garage-loving happy-slapping cunts who'll harass anyone better looking than them (ie, everyone). Let them live in ignorance I say.

you should read your own posts sometime teejay, they havent made the second series, simply commissioned it. two different things.

tho it is a great show so far - who the fuck thinks it 'should ' be about 'normal' british schoolkids? that wouldn't be half as funny.

gene simmons is totally ace, tho the point about him keeping his glasses on to hide his fucked up eyes is most definitely true.

Actually I read on another forum that they have made it already. I will try and find the link for you and you can make your own mind up...

Edit1: Here you go. A post on the channel 4 "rock school" forum

I think that school is Boring as well.. Well I go to Kirkley High School in East Anglia and Gene Simmons is at our school filming the next Rock School! (Rock School 2) it's crazy here! Cool

Gene Simmons is at MY SCHOOL for ROCK SCHOOL 2!!!

\m/ >.< \m/
(NB Kirkley High School is in Lowestoft, Suffolk)

Edit2: Just to add two things:

1. They seem to have only just started filming so I was wrong to have said they have finished it already - I was speaking from memory about the above post - but they do seem to have started it, and are making it right now (see above post and "filming commencing this week" (from here dated 6th October - ie last Thursday)

2. Is it a coincidence that the school already has a "a thriving rock school led by members of The Darkness (three of whom happen to be ex-pupils)"?

But they're opening for Motorhead - so fair play.

I know what happens too, but I'm not going to spoil it.

How?? You can pm me the answer :)

And what is wrong with speaking elvish? I don't but I know people who can. Suppose it depends on how into LOTR you are.

I think the show is quite funny but Gene seems a bit up his own arse.

Nothing, technically - just that spending a huge amount of time learning a language that has absolutely no application in real life and was invented by an Oxford linguistics freak betrays a certain, ah, how shall I put it, oddness.

Having said that, about a year ago I got into reading up a bit on Orcish/the Black Speech. Don't get much cooler than that shit. Tolkien himself hated it though - a guy made him a chalice with that "one ring to rule them all" poem in the Black Speech and he threw it away. Weirdo.

I can see that but as the mother of a 16 yr old warhammer40k, anime/manga fan, who plays war games online, knew all 150 Pokemon names/abilities etc., is probably a bit further down the 'autistic' line than most kids it doesn't seem that odd to me. :)

This is the biggest pile of shit!!

Gene Simmons, the school, the people who produced it, those who like it and Channel four should hang their heads in shame.

Oh god, when will something save us from the seemingly never ending torture that is "reality" TV.

Would of been much more interseting if they did it at one of the high schools not far from mine, would love to see Gene shouting at some of the kids there, then get his head kicked in at break time

I still like him though

Well, let's face it, it wouldn't make good telly to have it be bunch of kids who knew about rock music or liked it, would it?

It does sound annoying though, as pk said, that it will reinforced stateside stereotypes of the fuddy-duddy British. And I also feel annoying as it will reinforce UK stereotypes about public school kids (although I am well aware that CH has quite a wide mix of pupils from scholarships). But, as I said, that's telly for you.

christ! no it wont, that utter bilge!!!

The premise of the show as that those taking part dont like rock music. Its the whole fucking point!

The latter point may be right, but laughing at public schoolkids is a right and proper thing to do anyway.

"I continue to listen to the same music that I did before Rock School: The Zutons, Queen, Stereophonics and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers." - Frances

"I enjoy RnB music" - Rodney

"I listen to RnB and Hiphop" - Kwame

http://www.christs-hospital.org.uk/rockschool.html

They picked a music class presumably so that they woud have some clue about playing instruments etc.

That's weird, cos my recollections of matches against CH are of lots of tweedy mothers shouting 'come on housey!' in very upper class accents.

Well, I have to say that clown from Kiss is an odd choice to teach anyone about rock music. Now if they'd got Lemmy to teach them, it might have been a bit more interesting.

Where did you go to school? Was it nearby or was it another "posh" rugby-playing boarding school?

My recollections were that for 99.9% of matches, either home or away, there were no parents there at all. Most people's homes were not that near. I have also provided figures about the income levels of student's families - the programme points out that 80% are from low income families. Maybe you read too much into people's accents?

No and no.

We always played on Saturdays and there were plenty of parents there then.

Funniest bit I thought of tonight's programme was the headmistress (or someother school high-up commenting on the Kiss tribute act...

"I didn't really like the music, but I guess that's because they were playing Kiss songs" :D

That's weird, cos two of my best friends that went there have got two of the strongest london accents of all my friends. Their families could be described as anything but upper class... don't let facts get in the way of your prejudices though
