and see how high they can stack each other up on their shoulders and do stupid post-goth "shit, someone's nicked my puppets!!!" hand movements?! :D

ha! i've got that ed alleyne johnson album... still stick it on occasionally, and enjoy it.

not quite sure why - by all usual measurements i should hate it.

:o

I must admit I had a pair of clogs... from Hebden Bridge... but I wasn't really hardcore enough to be a proper NMA fan.. I was too easily led into the wicked ways of dance music and swapped them and all my other heavy boots for trainers... :D

i was never part of the militia, though.

What got me was the people I used to speak to would go on about respect for others, respect for the alternative lifestyle, and then kick the shit out of anyone who wasn't the same, with their clogs on

Cunts

I'm easing up now

:)

:)

I'm confused - did these people attack folk in the audience at their gigs if they weren't fanatical enough, and did they attack them with clogs? Why clogs?

*some* New Model Army fans found a special blend of 'anarchist right on festy type in clogs and celtic tattoos' and 'macho beerboy bellowing misogynist hunting-in-packs cunts'. They were very good at it too.

but then lyrics like " i believe in vengeance, i believe in getting the bastards" didn't really help.

utter utter cunts. my ex punched two out in one brawl at a levellers gig once. felt quite sorry for the levellers, they kind of inherited the militia once NMA vanished

Because there was a fashion for NMA followers and other crusty type band followers to wear clogs... preferably with celtic designs on them...

I don't think I ever saw anyone kick the shit out of anyone else though.... not a side of it I was acquainted with tbh...

(all the current NMA fans I know are now late 30s, 40s or even 50s and although they still talk a good talk I think they're really rather tame!)

From what the militia people I've met have told me, they all disliked the Levellers as apparently they made some comment about definitely not wanting the militia to follow them... which apparently led to quite a schism in the Levellers v NMA thing which obviously has been healed since the Beautiful Days festy has started (or before.. I don't know)..

:D Ha!

Fair enough then - in most other parts of the country wearing those would probably get them beaten up. They must have been balancing the abuse out. I can never work out how clogs stay on.....

nah, they can't all have disliked them because there were lots at Levellers gigs in the early 90s. trust me, i smelt them ;)

they weren't the dutch-type slip on clogs, but rather work boots or shoes with a heavy wooden sole rivetted on, as worn by miners and, well, lots of people in the olden days.

I think this was a bit later though... and not all by any means... there was some other reason too, although I can't remember what it was now... maybe something to do with Joolz... will ask friends when I see them, they'll be delighted to see me taking an interest.. :D

i really do need a time-machine to go and sort young milesy out...luckily i grew out of it all by 20/21 :D

I just this week bought her book.. Billie something or other it's called... I think I'm having an early mid-life crisis.... memories of the poetry tent in Glastonbury and more innocent, less cynical days.... haven't actually opened it up though...

always a fun day at Walkleys Cloggs when the NMA kids were there - much laughing and pointing and ringing of cash registers :D

It's closed down now you know and the building is being turned in to luxury apartments ;)

Those in the know got their clogs from Ribiki's in Todmorden anyway ...

actually not those luxury apartments - but it is a trend in that neck of the woods .. :D

... and I've just noticed from milesy's picture that they haven't gone altogether - just moved to an industrial unit round the corner ...
