Because they're not in RAJAR like Rock FM et al, the listening figures don't get published at all - all a station can go on is its own surveys or just counting the phone-calls that come in!
But I firmly believe it's the future of radio. If you want to listen to "another hour of non-stop hits on Yet Another FM" in this day and age, you might as well put your iPod on. Community stations are offering something different - the people of the area are choosing what to broadcast, rather than Emap HQ in London. It's not as polished or slick, but give me something individual and unique over a bland playlist any day!
