Nah, Bush freely admits to having been an alcoholic, probably milks it a little, in fact.

Of course, he says he did it through finding Jesus etc. etc., which, thankfully, isn't such a big vote-winner over here.

Your second sentance answers the apparant conundrum in your first ...

His voter base are fundaMENTAList rightwing Christian freaks ...

All those clips on telly yesterday, of him lying about his drink problem, must surely spell the end him.

Yep, and all this time he tried to play the "nice bloke of politics" angle as well...what a twat.

Edited to add: Christ just read this lot! Almost as much news on this as when Cameron got elected...

Bush's problems with drink didn't seem to put people off voting for him, more's the pity.

I think he said he quit just after his 40th birthday, so before he entered serious politics (but then, there was that fall off the bike....)

... and the choking on a pretzel that made him unconcious....

BBC N24 are showing MP after MP calling for him to go.

24 of them will resign on Monday if he's still there

Goodbye-eee!

he as admited he as a drink problem and for the sake of his family (he as child of about eight months old) he should resign and get himself sorted out.alcholics do not always succeed the first time that they try to get of the drink

Yes he has a family and should really not be missing out on his time with his family.

But do you not think his party are stabbing him in the back. He delivered the best election result since the 20's. Compared to other liberal democrat leaders he has been strong and different from conservative and labour party.

He seems more human than the other two leaders. Nobody is perfect and we shouldnt expect our MPs to be either. This may be beyond slight imperfection and require his resignation but I am dissapointed that it must turn into a killing frenzy just so someone can become new leader.

to the credit of most of the top contenders have refuse to run against him.and yes there are those who have stabbed in the back.yes he is the least noxious of the party leaders.and i can only wish him well in tackling his problem

Given the shit way they have treated him, I wonder how much worse it would be if he had problems with an illegal drug.

he does, indeed, appear human compared to Blair. his most likely successor, if any, seems to be Simon Hughes. he is not that noxious, but he is another fucking Christian :(

Yes, through the fairly common virtue of not being Tony Blair or Micheal Howard. Hardly something to get excited about.

It seems the MPs knew about this for months and months. Most have kept quiet for a long time because Kennedy said he was getting it sorted. I think they have been quite patient actually.

I'd be tearing up my membership card, if I actually had one

Oh, well, here's hoping Simon Hughes stands, and is completely thrashed

All the best to him. Hopefully he can now concentrate on his health and his family a bit more.

I reckon some knew for years...

Now that he's gone it'll be interesting to see which faction of the party comes out on top, the "lefties" or the Orange Book lot.

Ed Davey not standing and supporting Menzies Campbell ...

I think it'll be Campbell vs Hughes - that could split the party down the middle though.

Probably. Clever move on Davey's part; he'd be a fool to stand now, far better to let the older generation fight it out and stand after the next election as a "new generation" type. He'll have more chance of success that way.

Absolutely. I think Hughes is playing a clever game too. Staying very loyal but keeping his cards close to his chest. I reckon the party membership will prefer him over the older Campbell. Although, to be honest either would do well.

Yep. Campbell is a bit old (and has noted health problems) at 64, he'd be hitting 70 by the next election. Hughes is 54 so still young in political terms...there are others but those two seem to have the much needed profile in the country and popularity with the party. I'm not sure the other likely candidates have both those qualities nailed down...
