Keeping cats cool

You're fed up with trying to lose weight, your husband wants to shag your neighbour, the birds are tweeting too loud and its upsetting you.

We get it, take it out on someone else eh?
My husband wants to shag my neighbour? Well, he is quite fit :hmm:

What makes you think your cat's uncomfortable?

It's also murderously hot in these parts as well, which tends to make people a little more cranky than otherwise, to be fair.

Which makes it the purrfect time to lighten the mood with a spot of 'Cat Head Theatre', methinks.

I'm not cranky. I find grown women getting their knickers in a twist and rubbing cats down with wet towels and panicking when they go near a window very amusing. And it sounds like the cat would be better off somewhere else.

That may be one of my favourite cat-humour videos to date :D

Some tips here: http://www.erodent.co.uk/KeepingCool.htm

I saw some guy on the Beeb yesterday cooling his room by hanging wet towels everywhere. Worth a try?
For severe overheating put them in their travel cage or box and place them in an OPEN fridge or freezer for a few minutes. If you don't have access to a fridge or freezer then get someone to go to the supermarket and get lots of packets of frozen vedge to pack around their travel cage.

Kanda was right!!

Definitely worth a try and will be tried forthwith.

Part of the problem should be fixed tomorrow when the central heating gets repaired and hopefully he'll get more confident about spending the day lying outside in the shade but if it stays like this I'm going to need to find somewhere else to live anyway, I can't live in heat like this for a prolonged period even if the cat can get sorted.

ive just nicked the idea of ice blocks, have put the on the mat by the door where they congregate and big cat is cuddling them. she is a longhaired one though

She's lovely :)

All the photos I have of ours are of him being a mad bastard or sitting in a tiny cardboard box chewing on his own tail (which he still does after chasing and 'catching' it) I'm so glad he didn't grow out of that, its very cute.

I went and sat outside for 15 minutes so that he would come outside but he spent the whole time running about getting even hotter, stupid boy. I've got the front door and the window open but I'm also worried about him jumping out the window and if this heat is a sign of things to come christ knows what I'm going to do when I have to work or go out.

Let the cat out? He'll find himself a nice bit of shade to chill in. And if he was running around he probably isn't getting heatstroke.

i can't say i've given a moment's thought about my cat's discomfort - she's not complaining (well she is, but no more than usual). as long as they have shade and water, they're fine. rubbing down with towels and holding under fans sounds a bit like overkill and is probably unwelcome.
cats do alright in places like egypt, so they'll be fine in places where it's only in the 30s. after all, they originated in the deserts.

shes a rescue kitteh and still quite aloof. you know she loves you when you get a polly-cuddle. littlun is just a nutter! then again, she is 1 next week

oh little cat is loving it! big cat (in pic above) has been finding it heavy going but she does have very long and thick hair. Shes mainly been hiding in the bath or under the bed as she wont go outside

Perhaps she should be rehomed?

wtf??!

She makes a joke and you come out with horrible shit like that.

Get a fucking grip.

Some people are so vindictive on here, it's shocking.

He has a catflap and he uses it at night or occasionally if we stand outside chatting to someone during the day and he hears us but our flat shares a yard with a commerical property so there are people walking about outside all day. He has only been allowed outside for the last three weeks since he was neutered and microchipped so he's still jumping at every noise and running for cover every time someone comes out, its not play-running so much as nervous running. When he's inside he is panting and lethargic (hence the vet saying he might be close to getting heat stroke) and when he's outside he's running to hide from people because he's not used to it yet.

I'm hoping that once he is more used to it he'll just find himself some shade outside and cool off during the day but I think its a consequence of timing - it getting hot before he's gotten used to going outside - that has caused this to become an issue.

wtf is nervous running?

The point still stands that if he's running (for whatever reason) he's probably fine

He's probably nervous running cos he thinks he's gonna be sprayed with water, wrapped in a towel then shoved in front of a fucking fan every five minutes.

:D:D
