Kebab meat

I *heart* fried chicken :o

I know but I always feel bad! Also, I find that it's addictive, so I try to avoid it (the smell is so enticing!)

I *really* must learn how to make some, or something similar...

I've never eaten a kebab from one of those turning meat things. I think it's because I didn't grow up here. Seems a very alien food if you're in your 20s when you're introduced to it :D

I used to have a really good kebab shop round the corner when I lived in Stokie - they did really good chicken breasts :)

I've like post-pub food as much as the next person. Chips, cheese and gravy is a particular favourite.

However, I could never get my ehad round the doner thing, it looks like a big elephant leg! And the way they scrape it off...i dunno. Maybe i need to be converted.

although i MUCH prefer gyros that you get in Greece....you see them making

ahh man. Why did you have to go and say it? ! :p

I absolutley adore gyros.

as for the donnor, i wont eat it. It looks putrid and i think a lot of the meat they use for it is excess meat that is swept from the floor ( from an abbatoir i think) and its all bundled together and voila...

most worrying thing is that i see people in kebab shops for lunch

Kebabs piss all over fried chicken.

Innit. The only time I've felt ill/been ill after eating fast food has been due to various fried chicken outlets whereas the many, many kebabs I've eaten have never made me ill.

Mmm - kebab meat and chips with garlic sauce. Yum!

I did hear tell of a study conducted on a piece of doner meat. It contained 32 different kinds of meat, only 16 of which they could identify, and one of which was seagull. Unfortunately, I've found no reference to this study anywhere. I think it's an urban myth, though it's one of those stories that should be true even if it isn't.

Eurch, kebabs. The only takeaway I ever eat is fish and chips, and then never in London 'cos it's twice the price, half the quantity and never as good as it is in Hull.

What religion would you have to be to enjoy kebabs??

I just tried to look up whats in that meat and the best I could do was

So the only place to look to for enlightenment is the manufacturers of the doner meat themselves. Sadly, they're are both protective and secretive about their doner meat. To help research this article several manufacturers of doner meat were contacted - only one responded. They said that doner meat is made from lamb belly (that fattest part) and the fundamental ingredients are rusk, salt, onion powder, chopping phosphate and ground pepper. They did however say the remaining ingredients were down to the preference of the manufacturer.

From http://www.drquincy.com/personal/nonfiction/lifestyle/whataretheingredientsoftakeawaydonermeat/

If you were wondering about chopping phosphate
he basic function of our chopper phosphates consists in the activation of the muscle protein and the stabilization of the sausage emulsion (improvement of consistency). The choice of the right phosphate combination plays a decisive role in obtaining these goals.

Seems all a bit mental to me, not knowing whats in what your eating....

Still tastes great... <noshes on large kebab with hot chilli>

I haven't either. I have had a shawarma though... but that's actually lamb afaik, rather than mixed up bits of a lamb :D

Donners look well dodgy to me, I don't think I'd ever eat one.

I really like a good kebab though. Best Mangals in West Kensington is fantastic.

I go through phases. When I lived in Hackney & then Dalston I never had a doner due to the easy availability of 'proper' kebabs, and very nice they were too. I'd only end up with a doner if I was staying at a mate's or whatever. They were always surprisingly nice though, and now I seem to live in a 'proper' kebab blackspot I enjoy doners whenever I fancy a kebab of any sort. YUM.
