tbh, it's not like other people were fuming because Bon Iver/The Suburbs /Beck or any other more alternative artist won a Grammy instead of Gaga/Kanye/Drake/Beyonce. Ignorance (as in, actual ignorance and close-mindedness, not subjective taste) in terms of music is one of the things that really crosses every kind of barrier. A lot of that seems just plain old rockism (which arguably is linked to racism - for instance, the whole "disco sucks" movement in the US looked a lot like a front against the gay/black/hispanic communities that embraced it, as it was taking the airwaves from "classic" rock and country stations)
Last year Primavera had Kendrick Lamar as a headliner, which is extraordinarily rare to see even solo around here, let alone in a festival. I wasn't interested, but it was a fantastic move (but still peeved for not having Wu-Tang two years ago).

Glastonbury’s Emily Eavis has revealed she received death threats after booking Kanye West as headliner for this year’s event.

An online petition attracted more than 133,000 signatures, calling for the rapper to be taken off the bill.

“It was not a pleasant world we unwrapped,” Eavis, who organises the line-up with her father, Glastonbury founder Michael, told The Times.

“I had death threats and stuff. It was just horrible. It was just crazy. It was getting out of control. We had Time magazine, all the American news channels saying they were going to come down. This incredible onslaught worldwide.

“It was quite upsetting because we were talking about something that was so exciting and interesting and fresh and brilliant for the festival. Kanye West is making the most exciting music at the moment. He is an amazing force as a performer. For us, getting the biggest star in the world was an amazing coup."

I hate Kanye West and I don't think that makes me racist, I think it just means I've got ears.

I'm not gonna go around sending death threats though. Even if I was going to Glastonbury I reckon I could find a dozen other bands to watch when he's on stage. I do think the Glastonbury bill could afford to be a bit less white, but I'd rather that was achieved by booking lots of great black artists who maybe don't get much chance to play events like this than by booking one giga-tosspot for a headline slot and then the same old parade of indie shite for the rest of the weekend.

Kanye performance even better on second viewing - you see, as the petit-bourgeiousie say of their boring 'contemporary' 'art': you have to spend time with the work. It is demanding.
