Kabbalah

answer my question and i'll answer yours - what exactly are my "'iconoclast' credentials"?

Your seeming need to take the minority position in many of the threads you post in provides you with them. :)

my original point was that scrabbling around in history for something to "try" (to use the words of the OP) is equally pretentious whether it's based on dusty Jewish philosophy or New Age crypto-pagan/culturally-raped junk. Either one is just perpetuating millenia of Chinese Whispers. It's just that Judaism ends up with more people dead or maimed than Feng Shui.

If analysing dead cultures and ancient philosophies is your thing, great, it's a valid field of study, but to actually believe in it as if it was something real? It's mysticism, by definition pointless to argue over - although having some stock in the Torah does help, which is a bit of shame, seeing as how it's a catalogue of misery and torture ruled over by a bloodythirsty tyrant deity with specific instructions to kill anyone who commits homosexual acts. It's all very well taking an interest in "God's internal processes", it's just regretful if that God is psychotic.

And like it or lump it, Kaballah is associated permanently with magic. But I expect someone will come along in a minute saying the "real" Kaballah isn't, and/or start excusing the Old Testament and tell me it has to be interpreted properly, or in a "modern context" - that I haven't really "got" Kabbalah, that I should consult a silencing religious "authority". But that's always the way with mysticism, isn't it? Me always knowing best - me the only one that can "see".

by "real" i didn't mean "true", just that the original k. at least have some historical/cultural curiosity value, as opposed to the recent version which serves purely as a money-making scheme to enrich one cynical new york family...

yeah, organised religion is a control system designed to preserve figures of "authority" and power, patriarchy, the heterosexual couple/family unit... and/or a certain ethnic group ("god's chosen people"...:( )

hehe of course magic doesn't work, if it did we'd all be dishing curses on each other...

but there'll always be curious, confused teenagers who'd want to "try" weird things just to see what it is... and by condemning something you'd probably just get them even more determined to try it...
so let the OP find that out for him(?)self, that it doesn't work-
but a "study" of kaballah makes no sense without knowledge of hebrew anyway, and how many will spend years learning a language simply to satisfy an occult curiosity? lol

when i was a teenager, black metal had made paganism/satanism "cool", and lots of people got into it just as a shallow fashion, lifestyle thing... that interest soon faded, but some good(?) things came out of it at least: many of these people went on to study ancient history, history of religion, and so on...
