The old lady has always been nothing more than a bastion to corruption

Italy itself has been a bastion of corruption for years too. I bet you'll find very dodgy elements in all Italian clubs - remember Fiorentina's misdeeds a couple of seasons back - though Juve are the fuckin worst of em. Hope they fuck up and lose the Scudetto too.

I bet Milan are the paragons of virtue :D All top level football is corrupt - lets see how far the FA enquiry into bungs goes before pointing fingers elsewhere!

i don't doubt it for a second in fact there does seem to be quite a bit in the italian game, however just because everyone is doing it, does not make it an excuse - when teams are caught like this they should be hit very hard

Absolutely...but there seemed to be a hint of jingoism in other people's posts re: Italian football.

The obvious test case is Marseille, but whether UEFA has the balls to do the same to Juve, or force the Italian FA into action is debatable. Bernard Tapie was sent to jail I think and the club docked 20 points (or were they relegated?). There's no way in hell Juve will be relegated, just not going to happen because they're too big, docking 'em a lot of poitns woudl be good -just enoguh tyo make them finsiedh one place above the relegation zone.

At the very least I imagine the games in question will be awarded to the other teams, which will the affect Milan, Inter and the other clubs chasing European places.

As a follower of Juve i'm dissapointed to hear about this . . . but not altogether surprised.

I heard they could be relegated to Seria C

marseill were HUGE when they were relegated were they not, recent CL winners and some of the best players in the world

Yeah they were CL champions, but as a club they don't have the history or stature of Juventus - that counts for a lot at UEFA. Plus Tapie was a "character" who made himself pretty unpopular in certain high-ranking circles, whereas Moggi is more of a backroom man.

When I think of that Marseille team the only images I have are Jean-Pierre Papin and the chairman!

Oh and if the do get sent to Serie C we'll kindly have Buffon and Zambrotta at Barca  :D

Not really a shock, all those last minute penalties they were getting, dodgy as fuck.

Now if someone could prove riley is bent....

Take Nedved with ya too.

I used to follow Italian football but became totally disillusioned sometime around 2003/2004. It seems that everything revolving around Serie A is tainted -- coaches, refs, managers, sponsors and even the players ... :( Then again, from a certain angle, isn't all these kind of ... normal, for football, that is?

Nah. As much as I dislike her, the Old Lady -- along with all Serie A corruptions -- will never die. How can you kill something like ... Fiat? :D:(

WSC this month carried an article on the 1984/85 Serie A season when Verona won it. They pointed out that funnily enough, it was a season when the referees were selected for matches by ballot rather than appointed by a panel

I heard it might be even worse, they might get relegated to the SPL!

Pessotto isn't anything to do with the match fixing though. Apparently he's not involved and the authorities aren't going after him.

Sad because he was a decent player - I hope he makes a full recovery :(

Maybe I'm a little too prone to conspiracies but does this 'fall' not strike you as a little bit odd given the timing and everything and what is at stake?

Police in Turin are investigating the possibility that Pessotto attempted suicide and his wife Reana has today confirmed that her husband has been struggling with depression.

Speaking with the La Repubblica newspaper, she denied claims that her husband was dealing with a serious illness connected with doping.

“There is no truth in that, absolutely none,” she is quoted as saying on repubblica.it. “I want you to tell everybody that. Gianluca was simply stressed, depressed.
