Justice done - Steven Gerrard found not guilty

You know ... IF Gerrard didn't know the guy had just been hit and IF Gerrard had thought the guy was approaching him in an agressive manner likely to lead to an attack, THEN it would be understandable that he threw the 1st punch.
Yet, I find those IFs kind of hard to accept (though odd things happen in real life) and even accepting them it seems there were better alternatives than just punching the guy repeatedly.

Problem is, of course, they needed to prove that the given scenario was not true and he punched him knowing it was not self defence.

He punched the guy repeatedly, and yet that is not "affray"?

Does anyone have a definition of what "affray" actually is?

Amir khan cripples someone by driving like a twat- let off.

Alex ferguson drive down the hard shoulder to avoid a traffic jam- let off

Just two off the top of my head. Money buys the best legal team.

Just remembered two more non sport examples -Michael Jackson and oj simpson

agree, it's all about the legal team.

a more useful source might be this:
In current English Law, affray forms part of the Public Order Act 1986 under section 3. The act states:
A person is guilty of affray if he uses or threatens unlawful violence towards another and the person's conduct is such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety.
Where two or more persons use or threaten the unlawful violence, it is the conduct of them taken together that must be considered for the purpose of subsection (1)
For the purposes of this section a threat cannot be made by the use of words alone.
No person of reasonable firmness need actually be, or be likely to be, present at the scene.
Affray may be committed in private as well as in public places.
A person suspected of affray is subject to arrest, can be tried either in a Magistrates Court or Crown Court, and faces three years imprisonment and/or a fine on indictment; six months imprisonment and/or a fine summarily.

Here's hoping Gerrard gets alot of abuse on the terraces this season. Some nice "you're a thug wanker" kind of songs please :)

Jezus!

This thread is hilarious.

:D

I gave up playing/following football 30 years or more ago and it's amazing to see the tribalism I remember still survives.

I'm sure he could have twatted some kiddie with his cock and still got acquitted with his reputation intact

Yer.

It's a wee bit like the all-white juries in the deep south of the good ol' USofA that never quite seemed able to convict white peeps of violent (or any, for that matter,) crimes against black peeps, regardless the preponderance of evidence supporting conviction.

I'm pretty sure that an expensive legal team and a good QC are also useful in providing such juries with what appear to be "good reasons" to (at least self-) justify their verdicts.

Such is life.

:(

Woof

I'm sure that if Gerrard's trial had been held anywhere but in Liverpool, the verdict would have been different. But as it was, the jury - even if none of them were Liverpool supporters (which is hard to imagine anyway) - would have been too scared for their own personal safety after the trial to have given anything other than a not guilty verdict. Which Gerrard and his legal team would have been well aware of.
