I wouldn't mind seeing Lampard and Gerrard dropped, and them experimenting with Carrick and Hargreaves. The craftsman and the enforcer, similar (although admittedly lesser) to Pirlo and Gattuso. It's because of Steven Gerrard worship. Gerrard obsessives (or: "true England fans") insist that as long as Lampard is dropped and Carrick/Hargreaves/ANO covers the back, then Stevie G will tear round the pitch causing havoc with his unique Scouse genius. When this doesn't happen, it's because the left or right midfielder wasn't a proper winger and was "getting in Stevie's way".

I totally agree with Cole not being a left winger, and become incensed every England game when he always cuts in onto his right foot. He might be worth a try in the centre, with Hargreaves, but I fear he would wander too much and get in Rooney's way. Michael Carrick, on the other hand, gets altitude sickness beyond the halfway line but can't half pick a ball.Or even better, try one of the two, with joe Cole in the centre. Joe Cole isn't a leftwinger, he would be much better as the CM playmaker
