just seen a hypnotist at work

..saw the DB "something wicked" stage show when he called people up on stage....there was one bloke walking up the aisle & DB just pointed at him & said sorry mate...& turned him back...he ended up with this skinny long haired student type of about 18 in a baggy t shirt..

...DB sudenley put his hand on his face and said "sleep" or something & he went down instantly like a house of cards - legs folded under him

....the next day he actually posted about his experience on a forum - which I can't remember exactly & no chance of finding now but this looks pretty much the same sort of thing :

DB is probably quite different to your average circuit stage hypnotist tbf but when I went to see him a friend of mine got near the end of a process where he was clearly selecting people. It was a 'your arm is frozen in a raised position' thing. She said she knew that she was keeping it locked in position herself but the part of her trying to move it couldn't overpower the part trying to keep it locked. Then he said something a slightly different way and it freed up, so I guess the persuasive effect of what he was saying didn't work in that pattern - probably a way of weeding some people out.

I think it's pretty well established that you can put together a 'stage hypnosis' act with almost nothing in it that would generally be called 'hypnosis' though. However, if there are things we would generally agree to call hypnosis, I think it's a bit of stretch to say they are never used in stage acts.

It's not like the case of psychics where no one seems to have ever actually done anything really impressive* once you look at it closely.

* - aside from persuade people to believe them, obviously

e2a - some people characterize hypnosis as a kind of role-playing game which some especially emotional people can get totally lost in - it's hard to characterize even stage hypnosis as universally 'fake' under that definition - though it would depend on what the particular stage hypnotist says is happening.

The stage/entertainment/make-them-bark-like-dog types, yes, of course they fucking are :D

No they aren't. A mate of mine couldn't smoke for days after getting hypnotised that cigarettes taste Of acid in benidorm, he also had no memory of the hour he was under, people were nearly kicking off on stage at one point when he made them all think one of them farted. It's real, just in varying levels in stage shows.

Anything you see on a stage is fake, insofar as the actions of the person involved are down to the pressure to perform, a desire to be part of the show/be "correct", and in many cases outright bribery.

Not so at all.

I've witnessed stage hypnosis twice. Once on my then girlfriend who was made to cuddle the nearest female stranger when certain music was played, and once where a colleague did a ballet dance when the hypnotist said something.

Another time I was with Mrs Spy and the stage hypnotist had the audience doing stuff like clasping their hands, holding up fingers, and standing up then sitting down. At various points people dropped out and those still left at the end were the ones he brought up on the stage.

I dropped out soon after the hands in the air thing. On the drive home, a journey that I was very familiar with, I missed several turnings and drove straight past our house. Something definitely went on.
