Just how good are Teenage Fanclub?

i always liked the track they did with cypress hill the best. they were dull at best. arab strap do that schtick lyrically and musically cleverer and more entertaining.

I'm not sure I count as a fan, but I have a fair few of their albums, and have a few of their songs in my repertoire. Best thing about them is the songwriting, which is generally pretty good, and now and again quite brilliant. Worst thing is the singing, which tends towards dreary and drippy. My favourite albums of theirs are Grand Prix, Thirteen, Songs From Northern Britain, and Catholic Education, in that order.

Excellent though not utterly great.

really. thirteen is pretty ropey I reckon. No Bandwagonesque?
which is great.

I was actually listening to Grand Prix and Songs from... the other week 'cos I hadn't hear them in ages and started singing something to myself.
still great. it is like comfort food or a warm blanket, there's no real daring innovation or anything but then they never claimed there would be and they're great at what they do.

Liked 'em but, what with one thing and another, stopped listening after Grand Prix.

Pretty much everyone I know hates them.

Thirteen isn't a particularly well recorded album, but it has some fantastic songs on it. Bandwagonesque is kind of the opposite.

I agree about thirteen, some of the songs are very good. So are the songs on bandwagonesque though. I didn't like Northern Britain much.

it does have a few great songs (Hang On is a great opener) but as a whole it's mess -
whereas Bandwagonesque is great on both counts I think.
