Just broke my laptop screen

They've quoted £125

Oh dear.

Or could just buy a big screen and use it as a desktop? 19" for less that a hundred quid these days?

House insurance claim excess has to be min 100 quid so no point in claiming on that.

Mine's not for some reason. I think it's £50 :hmm:

Decent credit cards come 90 day insurance for anything going wrong.

Claim on the Credit card. Pay the 50 quid, new laptop. No insurance premiums to worry about.

I did. I bought it with a Barclaycard :hmm:

Give it a good clean, wipe it back to factory settings. Pack it as close as you can to how it was. Take it in and say you bought this in advance of your sons birthday. When he opened it, this is how it was.

Your shocked, appalled.. yada yada yada, and demand a replacement...

Tsk! You nutty iFanboys and your Mac-lovin' ways! Keraazzy!

The reason I suggested a secondhand IBM is that they are considerably cheaper than a MacBook and every bit as tough (if not tougher). They also have the advantage of coming in a user-serviceable case (complete with guides on how to take them apart), making it easy to replace individual components yourself.

Probably a bit cheaper to claim on the insurance, though.

Actually they seem to have quietly dropped that little benefit from my Gold card and Barclays use to advertise it as a benefit, but now its not present I see.

True. But generally, it's not a good idea to pick up a laptop by it's screen or screen surround, no matter how robust it may seem...

Sounds very fragile to me - I pick my laptop up by the screen all the time and it doesn't do it any harm (old IBM). Anyway, just take it to the shop and jump up and down until they give you a new one - five weeks is far too early!

IBM Thinkpads are built like tanks, which is good if you're as cack-handed as me. :o

Hear hear.

Not one single smutty suggestion for how the damage may have occurred? Urbans, I am ashamed of you.

Sunray, this is the second time I've noticed you saying excesses are x amount and mine are never as dear as yours. Methinks you're paying for living in that there London(iirc)
