I had much the same experience trying to read Walt Whitman. But I persevered, and it turns out he's really rather good!I actually had to read 'Soft Machine' for a Lit module at uni and I actually got so frustrated with the shitty style of writing in that I threw the book across the room.![]()
Allegedly, though marijuana was popular in Elizabethan England too.Shakespeare was a crackhead.
Why is my verse so barren of new pride,
So far from variation or quick change?
Why with the time do I not glance aside
To new-found methods, and to compounds strange?
Why write I still all one, ever the same,
And keep invention in a noted weed,
That every word doth almost tell my name,
Showing their birth, and where they did proceed?
O! know sweet love I always write of you,
And you and love are still my argument;
So all my best is dressing old words new,
Spending again what is already spent:
For as the sun is daily new and old,
So is my love still telling what is told.
phil. you tell us you're a phd with several books published whose been all over the world, yet all you can come up with is 'baldy'

says the dwarf
Charles Baudelaire, Aldous Huxley, Robert Southey, Thomas de Quincey, William Burroughs, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Mary Shelley, Wilkie Collins, Antonin Artaud, De Quincey, Poe, Rimbaud, Flaubert, Robert Stevenson, Sigmund Freud, Arthur Conan Doyle, JackKerouac, Timothy Leary.
And, yeah, Lewis Carol.
Artaud was already totally doolally-tap even before he started on the drugs, though.

i think you might have that mixed up... Junkie was published in 1953 before anyone had ever heard of bukowski or burroughs, so neither of them were doing readings then. He wouldnt have been staying at the Chelsea hotel in Junkie, it was all about him before he was writing or famous. there is a scene in a Bukowski book Women though where he is doing a reading and burroughs is there.Junky was crap.
''Yeah, scored some junk, went up to my room at the chelsea, did my junk, saw that Bukowski guy at a reading - yeah he's a dick. need to score some more junk...''
BORING and SHIT!
you're not allowed to use the word ''junkie'' on urban btw.

the chelsea thing was for dramatic effect.
However, in junkie, there is definitely a scene Burroughs describes about meeting Bukowski at somekind of reading...similar to the scene that Bukowski describes about meeting Burroughs in Women.
but Junkie was written in 1953 and (it says on wikipedia) bukowski only started writing poetry in 1957..... i am pretty sure that that scene isn't from junkie.... but not 100% tho
philip k dick quite liked his drugs iirc

i'll start you off with thos. de quincey, famous for 'the english mail-coach' and something about opium.
