Re: that picture of the girl that you posted. I had a play with it in Photoshop Elements. A bit of tweaking of Levels lightened it. Then Using Colour Variations with a bit of decrease blue and some increase green made a very great difference. The mud in the foreground turns out to be grass. Cropping is up to you, of course but I tried it and thought it improved the picture.
