Judgement day (Calzaghe vs Hopkins)

Hmmm. Sounds a close one. Will watch the re-run today.

Not a bad first fight in the States at a new weight though. Well done Joe.

I love watching boxing, but wouldnt claim to be an officianado. It was a great night tho, really enjoyed the rerun of the McCrory v Jones fight. I can remember watching that at the time and pretty sure it won fight of the year for 1983.

Anyway my thoughts on last night were that Joe deserved to win because he went forward the whole fight, whereas Hopking just ran away from him, often turning his back altogether. The referee should never have let him get away with the continuous holding on and the play acting for the low blows was comical, I wonder whether the judges actually took this into consideration at all cos even they must have seen he hadn't been hit! At the end of the day Joe went and fought in his backyard, with his referee and his judges and won. I know US judges like offensive boxers but was unsure whether they were gonna see thru Hopkins total negativity.

One other thing, total respect to the Welsh fans out there who showed the Hatton fans a thing or two about behaviour. Not a murmur when the US anthem was played, and it must have been very tempting to sing something about being beaten by a white boy at the end! Well done guys, lets just hope for the same kind of respect at Wembley.

I enjoyed that. Could watch it again and again.

Hopkins was conning the ref from Round 2. Cortez was awful again. Is this man blind when it comes to American boxers headbutting/elbowing?

Nice to see Calzaghe dish it out as well.

Yep. The fans showed some fucking respect and manners unlike those Hatton louts.

i am glad calzagi got the decision, i just thought that hopkins punches were far cleaners than joe's, all you have to do is look at the 2 fighters faces when the fight had finished

I think Hopkins lost points because he didn't actually come out and fight on home turf. Calzaghe spent 5 rounds playing the fight the way Hopkins wanted, and then stepped up the pace later on. Hopkins holding far too much though.

Like I said, when Joe dropped his gloves and Hopkins wouldn't come out for him - the fight went Joe's way.

you may be right,

Didnt watch it - was it a low blow as claimed?

It was low, but it didn't look low enough to have hit his nuts, and there seemed to be little force in the impact.

A messy fight in my opinion, and compubox doesn't tell the complete story. I felt a draw could have been justified, but no way did Hopkins deserve to win. The yanks do score for the guy doing the most work and moving forward. It's just a shame there was so much clinching and arms being used to grab arms and stop combinations happening.

Courtez was shit at reffing, let hopkins away with going in with the head far too many times- WELL DONE JOE and thank you MSTV# for the live streaming:cool:

UP yours setanta:mad:

Shit fight right result. Hopkins comes out of this looking better than Calzaghe imo, forget the shite he pulled with the low blow etc.. he brought Calzaghe back to earth and made Joe look amateurish at times.

But, Calzaghe deserved the win, no doubt about it.

He HAS to fight Pavlik next.

But why would he want to? Legacy secured, one big, last payday against an ageing Roy Jones and he's seen off all the big names from his era. What gain does Joe have in fighting a hungry, talented fighter who can match his own handspeed? A couple of years ago, maybe. Now.....?

agreed!

plus he won't wanna go back down to super middleweight to fight him

Bollox to RJJ, or Tarver, or any of the old guard for that matter imo. At least Hopkins was seen as Top 10 p4p by many in the game going into the fight.

Pavlik is young and hungry and he's a banger, but it's shame he's tied up for the foreseeable future.

I just think Calzaghe should go that route, against the old guys he's got nothing to gain, even with Pavlik he hasn't much to gain but at least he's showing he's not afraid to fight a young hungry fighter. With someone like RJJ it's not gonna be a pretty spectacle, at all, wouldn't be as bad as like against Hopkins but dire all the same I reckon.

He has at least 2 or 3 more fights in him, 4 even, go out undefeated in 49 and he'd equal Marciano. THAT'S legacy.

Because hed be a stone or 2 heavier than Pavlik at fightime
Hes as fast and as fit as Pavlik- maybe he doesnt have the chilling punching power of him -but if Calzaghe has anything he doesnt have a weak chin
Pavlik also has loads of Middleweight belts-Calzaghes oppurtunity to be a Champion at 3 weights:)
Personally i reckon Pavlik at a Middleweight/SuperMiddle catchweight might be an option-and could possibly be easier than Roy Jones
