He manages to be a wanker on screen and on real life. The reason he was good in 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' was that he was playing a wanker on it, i.e. he was being himself

Every time I see it I just wonder why no-one's left him with a loud hand-print across the cheek.

As has been mentioned he does seem to have inadvertently wandered onto the set of some adequate films (Gattaca, eXistenZ and I Heart Hucakbees), but he's cardboardy as fuck.

I'd have to agree with this. Just seen Sleuth and thought his performance made a so so film even worse. At least it was short.
